i only recently got to listening to his records..right now i have Either/Or and From a Basement On A Hill.. plus his good will hunting stuff. i have to say...his music really sounds like the person who wrote it was in a lot of pain. We get these kinda stuff said about cobain, staley etc etc..but somehow..i never felt that the 'pain' was as much as the 'angst' as far as those 2 were concerned. with smith though..he really does sound lost..

any1 else got takes on this?

Elliot Smith is the most amazing song writer I have ever listened to. His music is also very deep, dark and sad. Sometimes when I listen to him, it really lifts my spirits, and there are definitly songs that are rocking and uplifting, but other times, I get really bogged down in my head, because there is so many lyrics and parts of songs that I can relate to, but could never describe as he paints it.

He is an artist that I would recommend anyone listening to. If you liked Either/Or and Basement on the Hill, might I suggest Figure 8. I find this album to be the most diverse of his albums, there is quite a wide variety of songs on this album, and I think, after now thoroughly listenign to all of his records, this is now my favourite. But you can't go wrong with any of the 6 put out. I enjoy listening to his 1st 2 records, which are very low-fi, compared to the last 4 recordings.

    To Elliot :)

yup. he was amazing. not only as a song writer but his geetar playing is even more so. as a geetar player who occasionaly tries others tablature, his and nick drake are some of the most difficult to play.for me anyway.

  • elliott smith's music is absolutely amazing (see my handle). you are right, it is hauntingly depressing but very calming as well.

i love all of his albums and highly recommend him to people whenever i can.

it is really tragic that we lost him, it's sad no one saw it coming who could've helped him.

I recently listned to the latest Ben Folds solo CD, and while I knew ahead of time he did right a song about Elliot, I didn't know which. When I finally heard it and read the lyrics, I knew that Ben must have really been affected by his death. It's a very nice song, tugs at the heart-strings. Here are the lyrics:

    Late

    Under some dirty words
    On a dirty wall
    Eating take-out by myself
    I played the shows
Got back in the van and put the walkman on
    And you were playing

In some other dive a thousand miles away
I played a thousand times before
    And like pathetic stars
The truck stops and the rock club walls
    I always knew
    You saw them too
    But you never will again

    It's too late
    Don't you know
It's been too late for a long time

Elliott, man you played a fine guitar
    And some dirty basketball
    The songs you wrote
    Got me through a lot
    Just wanna tell you that

    But it's too late
    It's too late
    No, don't you know
    it's been too late
    for a long time

    Oh, no
    Things were looking up
    Least that's what I heard
    Oh, no
Someone came and washed away your hard-earned
    Peace of mind

When desperate static beats the silence up
A quiet truth to calm you down
    The songs you wrote
    Got me through a lot
    Just wanna tell you that

    But it's too late
    It's too late
    No, don't you know
    It's been too late
    For a long time
    It's too late
    It's too late
    No, don't you know
    It's been too late
    For a long time

    great artists!

From A Basment On The Hill is his best IMO
So that is how I learned the lesson that everyone is alone. And your eyes must do some raining if you are ever going to grow. But when crying don't help and you can't compose yourself. It is best to compose a poem, an honest longing or simple song of hope.
    That is why I'm singing

So much love for Elliott Smith. Oddly enough I just got into him not to long ago as well shahril. Boy have I been missing out!!!! My girl Meddledeal kept telling me "listen to him! you'd LOVE him! listen to him!" Well I finally did and she was more than right. :) He just captured my heart right away. Absolutely beautiful music. It's so pure and true. You're right shahril, sooo much pain. His music is just so real...one of the many things I appreciate about him as an artist. These are words, emotions, tones that really strike a chord with you. He takes such haunted sadness and transforms it into beauty. Dark but beautiful. His music is painful, sad but also so beautiful, calming and relateable. It's music stripped down naked and bare. He couldn't be more straight from the heart & soul. :o

    One of my favs....

Somebody That I Used To Know

I had tender feelings that you made hard
But it's your heart, not mine, that's scarred
So when i go home, i'll be happy to go
You're just somebody that i used to know

You don't need my help anymore
It's all now to you, there ain't no before
Now that you're big enough to run your own show
You're just somebody that i used to know

I watched you deal in a dying day
And throw a living past away
So you can be sure that you're in control
You're just somebody that i used to know

I know you don't think you did me wrong
And i can't stay this mad for long
Keeping a hold on what you just let go
You're just somebody that I used to know

i too didnt find this man until after he was gone. the song twilight from basement on the hill was my autobiography for a long time.

all his albums are excellent though, in such different ways.
  • If you don't have Figure 8, you need to get it cuz it's amazing! That's all I have to say.

  • BTW I named my dog Elliott. I was planning on using it for a firstborn son but my husband was not so enthusiastic about that idea.
