Blast from the past - Depeche Mode "101"

I am not afraid to admit that this was a soundtrack to the summer in the late 80's as a kid, for me.

I think to date, it is still one of my favorite live albums up with the likes of The Scorpions 'Word Wide Live" and Pearl Jam's "Live on Two Legs."

Any other old school Depeche Mode fans who liked this album, or anything from them back in the day?

Was the music i grew up with. Always happy to hear some songs played on the radio. Too bad i always missed them live. Still a great band.

    hahaha... love it!

i have it on my MP3 player, and sometimes i find it sounds a little dated... and a couple of tracks I have to skip (i.e. Pleasure Little Treasure, Master and Servant).... but most of them are classic!!

Love the version of Somebody on 101.... "ten..der..ly....yyyy" :p

actually, my best friend from high school just got married, and he used Somebody as their first dance! :)

Yeah, I have some really special memories to "Somebody" from 101 as well. Great version of that song.

I see what you mean by a little dated, as I am listening to it right now. i am on "Blasphemous Rumors." But over all, it is very nostalgic for me.

Yes, big fan here. 101 is just great and scorpions world wide live is also one of my favorite live records. I also have to mention Iron Maiden´s live after death as one of the best.

Depeche Mode has put out some great albums and 101 is a truly great live album, if a little dated at times. Speaking about the song "Somebody", Axl Rose supposedly confided to Dave Gahan that he loved that song and wished he could have pulled off playing it live. When they played that on 101 the crowd sounded like the Beatles at Ed Sullivan.

    And the crowd sings:

"Grabbing hands....grab all they can...Everything counts in large amounts"

"The grabbing hands....grab all they can...Everything counts in large amounts"

Yeah I still like them. I don't listen to 101 much anymore but I am still hooked on the Violater album, especially Clean. Another great track that still get played is - I feel you. In fact I think i'll put it on now!!

I wanted to use Somebody as my first dance but my husband refused because he said it didn't have a distinct beat.

I can't skip over any of it, this is my favorite era of DM with the add on of Violator. Black Celebration is one of my all time fav albums. I finally got to see them live a few years back and was disappointed that they didn't play more of this stuff, though I understand why they didn't. My neighbor when I was growing up went to see them on the 101 tour so I have a shirt from it. I just love it.

haha.... my sister was at that wedding with me, and she was not impressed by the use of Somebody as a first dance. She thought i was pretty lame - I defended my friend and told my sister that he and used to sit in the back of our grade 12 math class and listen to DM all the time! so she said the song would have made sense then, if he had been marrying ME!! hahaha... :)

my only DM t-shirt is from Song of Faith and Devotion... :o

I love Violator - I'm actually on my second copy of that CD...

I think my favorite song from it is Waiting For The Night:

and when i squinted the world seemed rose-tinted
    and angels appeared to decend.
and to my suprise, with half closed eyes,
things looked even better than when they were opened.

Not sure which thread to use, so I'll just use this one (is there no generic Depeche Mode thread?) :)

New single from Depeche Mode's upcoming album Spirit (dumb album name).

Single is called Where's the Revolution. It's pretty darn good IMO, although not super unique. Cool video.

  • My first concert of an international band back in March 1988 in Vienna. They played "Pipeline" which you will probably never hear again.
Still one of my all-time-top gigs, still going to DM-concerts, love the way they changed their style over the years.

Very interesting presale method... they make you work for it, lol. You get yourself on the list and are told what place you are on it right away, but then you give ways to move up the list. First, you have to buy their new album. That will move you up the most. To get further up you have to get your friends to sign up for the list through a link they give you to share via Twitter and Facebook. I have never seen this kind of method before. Unless someone gets on the list through my social media shares, I'm in spot 2,450 or something like that, lol. And that's just for the Vancouver show. I think this is kind of a pain in the ass (although admire the tactic as far as getting people to buy the new album goes. I would if it were being sold out of Canada). I'd prefer the normal first come, first served method.
