I'm giving a weezer record to a friend of mine who, believe it or not, has never heard them. Its a long story but I can't make a mix or give him both. What direction would you guys take:

1. The pop perfection that is the "Blue" album

or

2. The emotional rawness of Pinkerton

I'm at a loss here folks

They are both great albums for sure, but I'm drawn more to the rawness of Pinkerton.

I think Pinkerton is for Weezer what no code was for Pearl jam, both amazing flawless records, that got very little to no media attention. They [the albums] gained their reputations from the love of the fanbases.

Personally i'd say Pinketon. However, if you're giving this to someone who has never heard of them (shame on the individual) I'd say Blue is much more enjoyable on initial listens. Pinketon took a little time to become what it is to me. I actually thought it blew when it came out. hahahaah, i was so far off.

So yea, Blue is the easy choice here as an intro to this band
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”
  • If you're trying to get someone into the band, I'd say Blue is more suitable given the amount of familiar tracks on there.
    MSG 7/8-7/9/03 -- Boston 9/28/04 -- Hartford 5/13/06 -- Boston 5/24-5/25/06 -- MSG 6/24-6/25/08 -- Hartford 6/27/08 -- Philly 10/31/09 -- Hartford 5/15/10 -- Boston 5/17/10
  • That's a tough call. I would go with the Blue Album... start your friend from the beginning. I think I enjoy the actual music better on Pinkerton, but some of the lyrics make me cringe... like the reference to going to a Green Day concert.

I gotta go with the Blue Album here. One of my favorites of all time. Of course Pinkerton is good as well.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

I never knew soap made you taller.
  • Pinkerton.... Miles ahead of anything else they have done on a commercial album. Those 30 or so songs that Rivers leaked for album 5 that never ended up on album 5 were sweet as well. I would also put the album 4 demos prior to Maladroit up there. There are about 15 songs that never made an album from that batch of demos.

How sweet is it that we only have 4 songs left to make out own SFTBH? Bitchin' huh...

I was at the PJ show in Little Rock in 2003 in the second row... Jeff Ament was throwing out =W=eezer picks into the audience.
