Hey BCers.
How cool/uncool is the commodore ballroom? If this is my closest shot at seeing Billy Bragg, I may be insane and drive up. Are there cheap places to stay around the venue? Also, did that stupid passport law get passed?

it is plenty cool. Probably one of the biggest non arena places we have. Has a bar which is pretty expensive, and sometimes you get morons who are just going there for something to do, but that is how it goes. There are hostels on Main Street which are about a 10 minutes train/walk away, so I'm sure you could find somewhere cheap if you put your mind to it.

And you don't need a passport to cross the Canadian border yet, provided you are a north american citizen and have proof, like a birth certificate

We love the Commodore. The floor is bouncy, which is kinda fun. It has tables on different levels so you have a good view no matter where you sit if you're not standing on the floor. Good acoustics, small venue. There are quite a few hotels nearby. Prices seem to depend on the season; very reasonable in off season, higher in the summer.
