A lot of the doc "I am trying to break your heart" was taken from the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot era, but they mix in older songs too so it's hard to say.

highlights of earlier albums Dick Jones:

    AM:
    Casino Queen
    Box Full of Letters
    Passenger Side

    Being There:
    Misunderstood
    Monday
    Outtasite Outta Mind
    I got you
    sunken treasue

    Summerteeth:
    how to fight lonliness
    can't stand it
    she's a jar
    i'm always in love
    via chicago
    shot in the arm

those are the stand outs for me i'm sure others like other songs though.

Nail on the head. I love all those songs. Summerteeth is such an incredible album. Via Chicago is my favorite.

The Sunken Treasure DVD is awesome though, really shows off Tweedy's songwriting ability. Plus you can get all the mp3s of the songs featured on the DVD by accessing the Extras on your computer. Not bad at all, you get a kickazz DVD show, AND can make a CD as well.

isn't this band another bright eyes type band?
just a question, don't start shitting all over me.

in some sense maybe. both are essentially solo projects with a backing band (conor oberst and jeff tweedy), and both have a heavy folk influence. actually, the first few times i heard bright eyes it made me think of wilco quite a bit. but then, i like bright eyes. if you dont like bright eyes, that doesnt mean you'll dislike wilco though. wilco is a much more consistent band. a lot of times conor oberst's ambition exceeds his ability.

not bad list, though you forgot 'dreamer in my dreams'... the best song from being there!
  • Cool man thanks for that list. That should ease me into those albums quite nicely.

The new song, "The Thanks I Get" is awesome. Myspace page.

Dreamer in my Dreams is a very cool song i did forget that one. Also just wanted to add my two cents on the thanks i get.. .it is an awesome song :)

soulsinging i agree with a you to a degree about wilco being a backing band for tweedy he obviously writes teh lyrics, but espcially with the older cd's jay bennett (and others imput) were very curcial to those albums.

Plus the line up now has some very respectable musicians such as Nels Cline (GREAT GUITAR PLAYER) and Glenn Kotchie (very good drummer) who's musician ship really enhance the albums. Idon't feel that way when i listen to a bright eyes album.

Oh and for the record i like a good bit of bright eyes stuff so i'm not knocking him just wanted to throw that opinion out there on their differences.

  • Does it bug the shit out of anyone else when they show the argument in "IATTBYH" with Tweedy and Jay? I sure as hell couldn't listen to that shit for very long.

It's weird. It's hard to tell really who is right and who is wrong. There was definately some tenstion bewteween the two of them. I'm sure Jeff can be difficult to work with and that there is some truth about the whole center of the circle and everything. Jay is a technical guy who strives for perfection. So the two egos together couldn't have been a good thing. I saw Jay a few weeks ago and put on a pretty good show. I think they had to put that little argument in there though to build up to when Jay leaves the band...

I think the two differing creative forces were responsible for some of the bands best music. sometimes the ying needs that yang to bounce ideas off of and but heads with.

  • So was Jay really thinking of leaving before he got the boot? IMO I highly doubt that comment.

Anyway, anyone have the version of "Kamera" from the DVD? That version kills.

It is hard to say. I think he may have thought about it, but i have a feeling he probably would not have left unless he was pushed out as he was.

Yeah I think so too, it would be really hard to leave after those sessions, they knew they had something big with YHF. You could tell while they were recording it.

yeah, i wasnt saying the band wasn't good, i just meant as in there is clearly one person who is "in charge" and does basically all the writing while guiding the band's creative vision. their live album is stellar and having seen the dvd, there is some cohesion/contribution. i cant compare that to bright eyes really, as i dont know enough about them.

  • I am still trying to find that version of 'Kamera' from the documentary.

    Anyone?

  • How come I didn't see this topic sooner? I love, love Wilco. I've seen them three times as a band (once at Bridge School, once opening for R.E.M., and then headlining their own show), and I've seen Jeff Tweedy solo once (in Los Angeles). All four shows were brilliant, although I have to say that Tweedy solo was far and away my favorite of them all!

    My favorite Wilco songs:

    She's a Jar
    Forget the Flowers
    Bob Dylan's 49th Beard
I'm the Man Who Loves You
    Via Chicago
    Misunderstood (ESPECIALLY live!)
    Sunken Treasure
Remember the Mountain Bed (off "Mermaid Avenue")
I am Trying to Break Your Heart
    Jesus, etc.
    War on War
    Radio Cure
    Hummingbird
    Company in my Back
    Spiders (Kidsmoke)

  • The bass line in "Handshake Drugs" is addictive as hell.
