ok, not really. but i think the guns'n'roses albums are synonymous with the bloated hubris of followup albums... on par with oasis's 'be here now.' the albums have some truly amazing songs, but there is also a LOT of filler in there. so if you were in charge and had to pare these bad boys down to one disc, how would you do it?

i'd post my own, but i'll be honest: i've never heard all of both. i can't get through them. it's too much. so i'm hoping for some tips on the highlights so i can make my own manageable version...

  • It strikes me as odd that you have such an opinion on something that you admit to not even listening to all the way through. These albums are amazing and I can honestly say that I have listened to each one hundreds of times throughout my life.

They actually came out with a single disc version you can find here: http://www.amazon.com/Use-Your-Illusion-Guns-Nroses/dp/B00000DAHK/ref=pd_bbs_sr_4/104-6016660-3941530?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1190434291&sr=8-4

I tend to like the more epic songs so I couldn't make an 80 minute version very easily, but off the top of my head it would have to include:

    Live and Let Die
    November Rain
    Don't Damn Me
    Dead Horse
    Coma
    Civil War
    Yesterdays
    Breakdown
    Pretty Tied Up
    Locomotive
    Estranged

i've tried listening to them on multiple occasions and there's just so much filler i can't wrap my head around it. though that one on amazon looks pretty crappy.
  • UYI1 is pretty shit and I've not listened to it in about 10 years lol. UYI2 is brilliant however.
    "I am a doughnut." (live - Berlin, Germany - 11/03/96)

"Behave like rock stars - not like the President." (live - Noblesville, IN - 8/17/98)

"Yeah, I was gonna learn to play it (Breath) but somebody slipped me a bottle of viagra and was busy doing something else six times last night" (live - New York, NY - 9/10/98)

I think its unfair to compare the Illusions with an oasis album, Im sure more thought went into them than little noel is capable of, on the lyrics for sure. I think both UYI-1 & 2 have some blinding songs, garden of eden, locomotive, perfect crime, dont damn me, right next door to hell......................for me the bob dylan cover is the only song I can presently recall skipping, though its been years since Ive heard Gnr
  • Both albums are good. There is too much good stuff to eliminate it down to 1 disc. I mean, Estranged, November Rain, Civil War, and Come will take up half a cdr.

Anyway, why don't you listen through them and eliminate the songs that don't have some badass part. I think you will find that, even with the weaker songs, most of the songs will stay.
  • had this for a while,i think, burned as one album:

    civil war
    live and let die
    dont damn me
    the garden
    dont cry (original)
    14 years
    yesterdays
    you could be mine
    november rain
    dead horse
    estranged

    SOLID ALBUM

you dont get, get in the ring, but i think we've all had enough of that song. and no knockin on heavens door.
    Van '98, Sea I+II '00, Sea '01, Sea II '02, Van '03, Gorge, Van, Cal, Edm '05, Bos I+II, Phi I+II, DC, SF II+III, Port, Gorge I+II '06, DC, NY I+II '08, Sea I+II, Van, Ridge , LA III+IV' 09, Indy '10, Cal, Van '11, Lond, Van, Sea '13, Memphis '14, RRHOF '17, Sea I+II '18, Van I+II, Vegas I+II '24
  • Aside from the phone call part in Knockin, I think itsa pretty sweet song. Not as revolutionary as Hendrix's Dylan cover, but what is.
  • Civil War
    Dust N Bones
    Live and Let Die
    Don't Cry (Original)
    Perfect Crime
    November Rain
    Double Talkin Jive
    Locomotive
    Dead Horse
    Estranged
    You Could Be Mine
    Coma

No idea how long that is... but it's a damn good record.:p
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.
  • You Could Be Mine
    Right Next Door To Hell
    Dust 'n' Bones
    Civil War
    Pretty Tied Up
    14 Years
    November Rain
    Live And Let Die
    Estranged
    Don't Cry
    Knockin' On Heaven's Door

This has been discussed alot over the years on GNR boards and the fact is that what is filler to some tends to be a great song to someone else so I'm glad GNR released it all as I'm sure some great songs would be cut out. Saying that my favorites are as followed-
    Estranged
    Breakdown
    Locomotive
    Don't Damn Me
    Dust N Bones
    Civil War
    Coma
    November Rain
    Dead Horse

Also from the UYI sessions I'd nominate Crash Diet as one kick ass song.

without looking at the track listings and not in order:

    right next door to hell
    dust & bones
    don't cry
    perfect crime
    november rain
    coma
    civil war
    estranged
    you could be mine
    dead horse
    yesterdays
    14 Years
    Double talkin' jive

and yes Crash Diet is a fucking amazing song!!
Shadow of You Love is okay too.

You know, I really like both of them. If we're going to pare down double albums, I think we should start with Stadium Arcadium.

Edit: And do you think we can get Year Zero down to an EP?

It's true that there are some god-awful tracks on both CD's (I'm looking at you, My World), but I think as a whole they stack up well. Estranged is one of the greatest songs ever. In no particular order:

    Estranged
    Civil War
    Breakdown
    Locomotive
    November Rain
    Coma
    Dust N' Bones
    14 Years
    Yesterdays
    Dead Horse

    Good stuff.

Wal-Mart sold the Use Your Illusion duo as one. I bought it and didn't realize. :(
You are just a negative mindless pud.

Yeah that was the edited version someone mentioned earlier, there were no swear words on that one so it could be sold at places like Wal Mart.
  • Neither are perfect records, but I love the way the records mirror each other.

    McCartney song = Dylan Song
    Don't Cry = Don't Cry (alt)
    November Rain = Estranged

And I love the sound of that band on those albums. Just so timeless. I remember the first time I heard some of those songs they felt like songs I had known forever, yet I never really get tired of them.

i haven't listened to either in years, but how can UYI1 be crap with dust 'n' bones, live and let die, don't cry, double talkin' jive, november rain, the garden, dead horse AND coma on it? just my opinion.
