get them in order, bottomline, they're all classics

if you want psychedelia get Velvet Underground & nico
if you want dirty garage rock get white light/ white heat
if you want laid back after hours party get Velvet Underground
if you want 70's style rock get loaded
if you want to hear what the velvet underground were supposed to sound like get live:1969

I'm not too fond of the production on the fourth VU album, Loaded: It's a bit too smooth even though there are fine songs on there. But definitely, I'd recommend the first three albums.

loaded just for sweet jane. but even if you buy one and dont like it buy another. every album is very different. they could have used a different band name for every album and most would never connect them.

I disagree. Reed's tone is pretty similar on all their albums. Their self titled would be the largest departure.

White Light White Heat has my favorite Velvet song and one of my favorite songs period on it...The Gift.

Loaded... it's really easy listening, straightforward rock and roll.... has some great songs like Sweet jane, R&R, Who loves the sun etc. Yield really reminds me of this album, particularly In Hiding, Pilate and All those yesterdays!
Avoid the Nico/Banana album, it's so heroin orientated and kind of messy.

I think this album is a masterpiece...I wouldn't suggest avoiding this album. But to each their own.

    Get the boxset!
and then get the VU rarities & unreleased CD, it rocks too!

I'd stay away from White Light\White Heat until you either

    a. go crazy
    b. have finished sucking up all the more "sane" VU first.

make sure to smoke lots of pot while listening.
    it helps.

    I know Shannon Hoon would!

He used to replcae the lyrics to No Rain with

"I'd like to say that the velvet underground is great"

    when it is

"I'd like to say that my life is pretty plain"

    That messy-ness is why it's a classic.

I'd say go throught them in order. The first album with nico is probably the most popular and it is a good intro to the stuff they would release later on Loaded

    Heck yeah.
I used to have an mp3 of one of them versions,
but it mysteriously vanished from my harddrive.

Yep. It was only when Mo Tucker started to learn how to play the drums that the band started to fall apart.
