Hey Guys,

I remember listening to a rolling stones album and when the song came on, it sounded like the exact same riff as La Grange by ZZ top. What is the name of the rolling stones song please? and I'm going to assume the rolling stones wrote that riff first, correct?

Thank you, all help is appreciated.

The LaGrange riff was definitely "borrowed" from the Stones song "Shake Your Hips" off Exile on Main Street.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

Stones and ZZ Top both borrowed from Slim Harpo.

    Thanks Guys! :D
I love that riff, but could never remember the stone's song. I'll have to check out slim Harpo.

  • You should also check out John Lee Hooker. La Grange is heavily influenced by Hooker's music.
  • that is one of the nastiest riffs/progressions of our time. many artists have fucked around with it...there are tons of blues riffs that get passed on, borrowed, slightly ripped off.

tom petty actually kinda uses it in "saving grace"

Yes, that is a John Lee Hooker riff in both La Grange and Shake your Hips.

That is the signature John Lee Hooker "boogie."

In fact Z.Z. Top uses John Lee Hooker's vocal style in La Grange also.
