Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska

Love him or hate him, you have to admit this is one of the best albums ever recorded. It's like looking at a series of stark black and white pictures. The songs are scant on detail, but there's just something in the song's characters that ignite the imagination.

Best songs - Nebraska, Atlantic City, State Trooper, Used Cars

Make your life a mission - not an intermission. - Arnold Gasglow

I still love Born in the U.S.A. more, but Nebraska is quite good. I really really want to see him live now.
If I could, think I would give in.

Easily one of the greatest albums ever made. It's by far my favorite Springsteen album, and it's probably in my top 10 of all time as well.
"I try my best to chug, stomp, weep, whisper, moan, wheeze, scat, blurt, rage, whine, and seduce. With my voice I can sound like a girl, the boogieman, a Theremin, a cherry bomb, a clown, a doctor, a murderer. I can be tribal. Ironic. Or disturbed. My voice is really my instrument."

probably the one Springsteen record that holds up the best after all these years... this and BTR. "State Trooper" has to be one of the spookiest songs ever recorded. every track is gold.

Didn't they record this with the E-Street Band? But opted for the acoustic verions instead? After hearing Atlantic City live with the E-Street Band, I think I'd much prefer the acoustic version that's on the album. Much more spooky.

i believe they did record it.. but i know for a fact they did reherse it. Bruce just liked the demo he cut better and decided to release that.

some of the outtakes from Nebraska are worth seeking out too.

Is there an actual studio recording of that? I've got a live acoustic version from one of the Bridge shows and it's absoutely amazing. Could you hook me up with a PM?

I could see Penn being a Boss fan. Let us know how the movie is?

  • I just picked up Nebraska and LOVE IT! I know this record is a lot different than much of his catalog but can anyone tell me if he released any other records that are similar in sound/vibe/mood? (I know this thread is over eight years old but why start a new one?)

The Ghost of Tom Joad and Devils and Dust have a similar vibe. Personally, neither are near the perfection of Nebraska. Both are worth a listen and have their moments.

Exactly. Nebraska is the best, but Devils and Dust a fairly close second.

This album changed my life. At least as far music and what would only listen to before I knew of Nebraska and what it led me to.

Ain't it cool when you find albums that completely change your perspective on music? Three songs led me to let go of my hate for Springsteen. The first was "Downtown Train" by Tom Waits. I started to realize that it, among other songs, sounded a bit like Bruce. Second was when I realized that "Because the Night" was co-written by him. You can clearly hear both Springsteen's and Patti Smith's contributions to the song. Last was when I heard "The Wrestler". Since then, I have been a huge fan and have had a chance to see him live.
I would also say that "Never Mind the Bollocks" also changed how I looked at music.

It's amazing. Open all Night seems like t doesn't belong since it's the only upbeat song on the album. If they ever re-visit it for a reissue, i hope they include the E St version too. I know they've played a few Nebraska songs live over the years but would love to hear how they sounded in the studio
