A true TX legend was found dead in his Hollywood hotel today. Say what you'd like about rap, but he and Bun B (UGK) put Texas on the hip hop map and revolutionized the genre. A whole lot of mediocre MC's owe a ton to him and his partner. True Underground legends, and innovators of Country Rap Tunes, he will truly be missed. By this suburban honky at least. Very sad day.

Ah, typical. But if you know not of what you speak...
It was just a southern style. Before they hit it, rap was an east coast, west coast monopolized thing. They were one of the first in years to take it and put a new sound to it. Southern accents, and jazzy/bluesy samples and gritty beats. So, talk all the shit you want, but they were innovative and opened the doors for many sucka MC's to run in through. But, stay angry, young man. And naive.

Any dude in a song called "Big Pimpin" probably didn't change the world of music.....

...but he must have had fun doing it....

"change the world of music?" Never typed that. But, UGK did change the landscape of rap. Scarface and the Geto Boys were before them, sure, as Nirvana was to PJ. But they indeed put the South on the map as far as hip hop is concerned. And they had a unique sound. One which is still being emulated and built upon. Some crap to be sure, but who would Creed be without PJ? Same story, different language.
Big Pimpin was their "Last Kiss." Sell a million copies, gain some fans. And since you bring it up, would Jay-Z (who just tied Elvis for second on the list for the number of #1 albums, BTW) would have used a beat of theirs, and called to make a hit with them if they were just some hicks form the sticks with big black dicks? C'mon. Broaden your horizons. There's a whole world outside of Seattle. Take a peek.

    It was a joke.....

    rap still sucks....

    I don't live in Seattle...

I've traveled the world and I know how big it is....

    rap still sucks...

....and not sure where "big black dicks" fits into the conversation.

I get it. And by the Seattle comment, I meant musically. Figured I could generalize, too. But, really, for the most part, radio rap does suck. Just like radio "rock" nowadays. Can't listen to it. But Kweli, Mos Def, The Roots, there are amazing poets with mics out there. With a lot to say about the world we live in. Not just rims and bling and all that shit. To each their own, I guess.
    And congrats on your worldliness.

    Peace,
    Ott

Sorry to hear that he died but his music was just as dreadful as all the other so called rap coming out these days. I still cant believe how shit the rap genre has become compared to what it was in the 80's and 90's.

  • rap sucks period.. any song that starts off "uh uh yeah uh...", and any rapper who thinks they're "my boy", (yo, this is yo boy ______) just flat out sucks and contribute nothing to society......

what grown man with an elementary school diploma and a degree in finger painting from Happy Starts Pre-school names himself "Pimp C"?

Allow me to quote Eddie Vedder directly from Pearl Jam's second single:

    "Whoo! Uhhhuuh yeeeah"

I know, I know. That's different. He didn't start the song with that.

    Ha ha, of course.

    "Aah ahh ah aaaaaaaaahhhh
    yeaaaaaaaeeaaah yaaaaah
    ehhhhhh ehhhhhhh yeeeaaaaaaaaah"

I wish Eddie would learn to contribute something to society.
