Im a bit of Twilight Singers nut - Powder burns is intersting is an understatement. Greg Dulli is a legend - check out the Afghan Whigs too, maybe start with 1965
  • Yes i know Afghan Whigs, too. They did some great music. I was wondering if you know where can i get "I Wish I Was" (withouth vocals, only the instrumental version) of The Twilight Singers. This song plays in the background if you start their official web site. I kinda like it more without vocals... do you know if that version even exists??

Anyways, The Twilight Singers are playing tomorrow in Croatia with Mark Lanegan as a special guest!

  • I'm pretty obsessed with Twilight Singers right now, Greg Dulli has such an amazing ear for melodies, and chosing amazing musicians to perfrom with. I'm listening to their cover of Live with Me with Mark Lanegan on vocals at the moment, incredible stuff!

Yeah, I'm becoming obsessed too. It's almost a problem - I had to drop "Powder Burns" off at home because I stopped working. Saw them a few weeks ago in Brooklyn, Lanegan was beyond words.
  • Yeah I saw them a couple of weeks ago too, one of the very finest shows I've ever been to, and I've probably seen hundreds over the last ten years or so. Lanegan is indeed amazing, I loved how he kind of appeared from nowhere and suddenly you just heard this voice, man it was spine-tingling stuff.

It's cool how prolific Dulli is too, there's always something in the works.

I CANNOT wait for Lanegan and Dulli's project together, and I really hope Lanegan tours the US with Isobel Campbell. He was incredible, he has such intensity.

I wonder how Dulli will ever top "Powder Burns."

What I really like about Dulli is that he isn't interested in repeating an album. Each record he makes has a distinctive feel to it. Black Love is my favourite Whigs album, but 1965 was an incredible follow up record, loaded with great pop-rock hooks and a good-time party atmosphere. I liked the fact that Powder Burns returned to a more rocking kind of sound after slightly more sedate records. But ultimately you know that whatever mood or style he captures on a record, it will never be short of thrilling.

Absolutely, Powder Burns was such a departure; I only owned Blackberry Belle at the time, and was completely shocked. It is so much more sinister than his other records. Have you heard his solo cd? I haven't and was wondering if it was worth checking out.

To my absolute shame, I don't own his solo cd, purely because I was skint at the time it came out, and I'd read some reviews that said it was ok, but more of a stop-gap til the next Twilight Singers cd. I will be buying it at some point, because I'm told some of it is very good indeed.

Have you got their covers album She Loves You? It's pretty damn good, very diverse yet it all fits together so well.

Yeah, I have the covers album. Haven't listened to it nearly enough. I just remember being completely haunted by "Strange Fruit." He really redefined all of those songs.

EDIT: The "looped version" I referred to was from the original website intro. The instrumental has not been released, but I ripped it from the website myself.

Much of the solo disc was recorded during the Blackberry Belle sessions and actually features songs written for the Blackberry Belle project, so this kind of fits into the Twilight catalog

Thanks! What do you think of the album?
  • Saw them a few weeks ago... I have really been getting into this band lately. Number Nine has become one of my favorite songs ever.

And to be quite honest, I think I like them more than the Afghan Whigs.
The Man has a branch office in each of our brains, his corporate emblem is a white albatross, each local rep has a cover known as the Ego, and their mission in this world is Bad Shit.

    It's terrific!

    1. So Tight
This was originally released as a Twilight b-side to The Killer Teenage Wristband. Serious rocker!

    2. Cigarettes
Sounds like it fits in with the tracks from 1965

    3. Domani
Original from Twilight's Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair EP. Mellow and beautiful!

    4. Early Today
Nobody makes you want to feel disturbed like Dulli.

    5. Golden Boy
I'm not big on this song. Not sure what to compare it to...maybe some early Whigs?

    6. Black Swan
Another solid track that can fit on Black Love or 1965.

    7. Pussywillow
It's good...it' always great when Dulli pairs up with a female vocalist

    8. Wicked
Another Twilight track - original released as a very limited 7", re-released on the Japanese Blackberry Belle and again on this disc. It's a great f*ckin' song!

    9. A slow, piano driven version of a section of Cigarettes.
