I picked up Scout Niblett's newest album on a whim after reading a blurb about her in Magnet Magazine. This album is right up my alley; stripped-down bluesy stomps with pounding drums. She can go from a quiet whisper to a yowl and pull it off. She is compared to Cat Power and PJ Harvey for obvious reasons, but I think she has a spark of her own.

Tracklist for "Kidnapped By Neptune"
1. Hot To Death
2. Kidnapped By Neptune
3. Pom Poms
4. Lullaby for Scout in 10 Years
5. Fuck Treasure Island
6. Relax
7. Valvoline
8. Good For Me
9. Handsome
10. Safety Pants
11. Newburyport
12. This City
13. Wolfie
14. Drink To Me
15. Where Are You?

Don't wanna sound 'picky' or anything, but the 'N' theme can count for last names also? If so, it makes more easy for me to pick up an artist.

Here's what Transplant posted in the SMC Round 6 thread when we decided on starts with 'n.'

"I say if you are picking a singer/songwriter type, last name starting with N would work."

So, hopefully that makes things easier. Yeah, Scout Niblett won't show up between New Pornographers and Nirvana on your ipod, but it counts here.

  • ok after my first listen, while i was reading, here's my impression. some of the songs were really very good. i understand the comparison to cat power. some of the songs just sounded like filler to me, though. granted, i wasn't listening with my full attention, so i'll need to go back to it, but the record seemed very hit or miss to me. i have to say though, i seem to remember liking most of the tracks with the louder, distorted guitar. those sounded real nice. i definitely need to listen to this again.

seriously, I think I picked the worst letter in the alphabet. I can't complain so far on the outcome though.

Heh, I voted for it even. Then when checking what I actually have, there was slim pickens. We'll see what happens. Stick with it though, I like that there seems to be issues with "n" as a letter. I really don't know what to expect.

wow, her influences are all over the place. This collection sounds like it would be a B-sides/Rarities compilation. I have played this a couple times, pausing when I have to leave my desk. I swear when I click play again, I wonder who I am listening to. I am slightly surprised when I find that yeah, it is the same person.

This of course isn't a bad thing, I mean the songs as compiled don't flow for ME but the songs, specifically tracks 2, 3, 9, 11, and 13 are fantastic.

Nothing's really jumping out at me at the moment. I find myself getting easily distracted, and the somewhat disjointed nature of the songs I think affects that. There isn't much to latch onto in terms of catchy melodies and stuff. I like how sparse it sounds at times.

I really liked tracks 8, 9, and 10 but other than that it was just ok. There wasn't anything that really grabbed my attention. I could have done without the song about pom poms

So far I agree with everything people have said about "Kidnapped." I totally agree that its major flaw is the flow of the album. There are fantastic parts in there, but there's a lot of wading through "nothing" moments. Like in the song, "Newburyport," it feels like it's going nowhere, and then all of the sudden at around 2:55 the full band kicks in and plays a really rockin' part.

"Relax," "Handsome," and "Safety Pants" are my favorites off the album. I find myself singing "Relax" sometimes and most of the time I can't remember where the tune came from. It almost puts me in a trance. :)

Anyways, good luck to all looking for "N" artists. ;)
