Just saw it tonight in LA at the Nuart. Fantastic film. One of the best I've seen all year. Anybody else see it? Directed by Anton Corbijn (photographer for U2, Depeche Mode etc....he also photographed Eddie on the back cover of "Into The Wild" soundtrack.)

Sam Riley is phenomenol as Ian Curtis.

"Exquisitely balanced, and at times brimming with humour, Control is much more than a biopic about one of the music industry’s many casualties, or even a sketch of a particular era of sonic art. It’s a stunning portrait of internal struggle, ensuring those who have no knowledge of Joy Division, Ian Curtis or his premature end will be as moved as those who worship his memory, his music and the long shadow of a band that could have been."

  • I would like to see the movie, but I'm having a hard time finding a theatre that's showing it in the L.A. area. It looks like I'll have to wait until it comes out on cable like Sundance or Bravo. The reviews sound promising. I've always liked Joy Division, but I've intentionally stayed away from their music the past few years- it can really bring you down. I went through a period where all I listened to was Closer. Not recommended!
  • I saw this movie on Friday. Nothing short of phenomenal. Really Really amazing.. They managed to make the tale of a tragic suicide work at the cinema level. It's funny, beautiful and arty. Anyone who likes music films should enjoy this. There's musical links, to the punk stuff, electronica, NIN, Goth etc. Pumpkins, Lou Reed, Jane's Addiction and The doors. Joy Division are some kind of node where a lot of different strings in the whole progression of music get tied together. I find it altogether fascinating.

I want to know what Anton Cornijn’s next film is going to be!!! Cos this was a pretty good debut.

The man who plays Rob Gretton is also in a film called Dead Man's shoes which is great - if a little dark.

this just got a review in australia's sunday papers - it got amazing reviews and practically demanded the reader go see it - i cant say i was a huge joy divison fan, but the backstory itself sounds really interesting, and im a fan of music bios, done well ... hasnt started screening yet but will have to go along.

slightly off topic - (and there could already be a thread if someone wants to point me off to it) - but the same paper anounced the finalisation of the kurt cobain film bio, with courtney as a prouducer no less. The story itself - well it speaks for itself - but her involvment will give it such a sad lopsided slanted view...
    impatience is a gift ........
  • I loved Nirvana, but I really can't be bothered hearing much more about them. Last days put off Cobain films for life.

Saw this last week-end and it was really AMAZING. Acting, cinematography... really well made, and highly recommended!

Only knew very little about the band, and of course some of the songs. Didn't realise he was only 23 years old when he died.

    Very sad and tragic indeed...
  • I loved Joy Division at the time although for some reason never liked New Order. How is Samantha Morton as Deborah Curtis? She's one of my favourite actresses, loved her with Johnny Depp in The Libertine and in Spielberg's Minority Report.

Bet it won;t be screened up here, the powers that be only send us multliplex popcorn movies, nearest arthouse cinema is Glasgow....oh well, wait for the DVD I suppose.

  • I was tyring to find scottish showings for my mum. Only the UGC in glasgow are showing it. The GFT(Arty - Glasgow Film Theatre) aren't showing it at the moment, but they may in the future.

I never really liked New Order either except as floor filling dance music.

propping this thread back up ... has anyone seen both "Control" and the actual documentary "Joy Division"?

I'm putting one on my amazon wish list, I think I'm going with the actual documentary which has interviews with the band members, Peter Shelley of the Buzzcocks, Tony Wilson, etc ... I am a whore for music documetaries.

Curious if anyone has seen both and can convince me otherwise.

I've seen both, and I would recommend Control. The documentary and the film both covered exactly the same details, but with the documentary all you hear is Peter Hook talking like a tool, none of the interviews are particularly interesting...Control is much more interesting and emotional, gets to the core of who Ian Curtis was, and the music of Joy Division is used so well in the film. Like you, I love music docs, but this one was kind of "meh"...stick with the film for sure.

I had rented 'Control' not knowing much about Joy Division abd I really liked it, it was very well done. I rented 'Joy Division' next time I went and liked it a lot as well. I bought a Joy Division record a few days later (it hasn't arrived yet)

i saw control during its cinema release a while back now. it pained me to watch 'ian curtis'. and there were issues that came up during the film that i identified strongly with. when it came to the end it was quite literally almost too much for me to bear. but damn it was a good film.

I've seen both, and would recommend doing so. Saw Control awhile ago and loved it. Then saw the doc in May. It sets right some of the dramatized for film aspects of Control. That said, some drama is a good thing. The acting is fantastic as well. Someone mentioned Peter Hook being tool - even moreso is the guy who did the album artwork for the band. What a blowhard.

I downloaded Control off the internet - it was easy to find. It's also in two of my local libraries, so maybe y'all could check in your area. Happened to be in London to see Joy Division in a theatre. Dumb luck.
