Well they have just have number ones in both singles and album charts in Ireland and England yet they aren't that popular in the States. Why is this?
Very big band around these parts.

  • Americans in general like shitty music is my opinion....the Kings don't get a hell of a lot of play on radio, I assume, and they aren't even heard of in my neck of the woods.
There is a good article in Spin magazine that addresses in part the subject of your question, but it doesn't really offer any reasons

Has it got anything to do with their background?
Or it that kids are more into rap and hip hop.
  • there are more than a few bands from America that have been bigger overseas. Two come to mind.

The Pixies. Even from Boston, before the reunion tour..the biggest venue they played as a headliner (in Boston) was the Orpheum Theater..at theater with 2800 capacity.

Buffalo Tom is another one. You could walk up to the door the night of shows and get in no sweat.

I recall when i worked in Boston at a hospital and we had a scottish student for a year..and he was THRILLED that he could see Buffalo Tom so easily and often. He actually got me in to them.
  • It's funny, from what I know and have seen:

    Americans ♥ MMJ

    Europeans ♥ KOL

But the two don't seem to cross over very well, especially based on the response from most people I know from MMJ's support slot on PJ's 2006 tour.

In the article in Spin someone did offer the explanation that perhaps with KOL being from the south and that part of the world being somethhing a bit mysterious and unknown to most Europeans could have something to do with their popularity over there. I'm American, but it has always seemed to me that Europeans have a better grasp on good music than we do.
I live in Mississippi and exposure to bands like KOL and MMJ is basically zilch for kids because that won't get played on the radio. The only rock station in Jackson -- the captial -- plays nothing but nu metal for the most part. Kids, from my observations, are most inclined to listen to rap/hip-hop just because its all over the radio. They don't go on the internet looking for new music....my theory is that if you want to find the best music, don't turn on the radio....at least not around here

great band, but am i the only one that thinks there new album is a little weak? In my opinion there first three were far superior.

They are fairly popular around here, but man I am so sick of KOL. My old roommate loved them... would play their shit all the time. I personally think they fucking suck! Dude's voice gets on my nerves.

but to each his own.. you shouldn't care about what americans are listening to. as long as you like them.. that's all that matters.
Whoa, chill bro... you know you can't raise your voice like that when the lion's here.
  • KOL are bigger in the UK because at the time they came out over here bands like the Strokes had just made it big, and that scuzzy garage rock type sound was really popular with all the inde kids and KOL offered a slightly different take on it. And since then the whole indie scene has been the biggest thing going over here for quite a while, and thus KOL really prospered.

I was always under the impression that they had also been embraced by the alt-rock crowd too, but when I saw them in London a couple of months back it was almost exclusively indie kids.
  • you only get big in the states if you are shit like Nickelback or whiny emo.

    everything else is ignored.

That's not entirely true. Sure there are a lot of people who like them, but the public as a whole know very little about them. I've hardly ever heard them on the radio.

I think I might agree with you though I've only given it 2 listens so far. It seems like the first 4 tracks are very solid but it trails off after that.
I wish I was as fortunate, as fortunate as me.

The Indie kids really got into them after they cut their hair and started looking the part.

Caleb cut his hair but was that because he wanted to save it. I would have thought that would have been played more on the US radio. Played alot here in Ireland

i think their first two albums aren't great overall...........some really good songs, but some that missed big time.

Last two albums are very good all the way through.

  • the Kings Of Leon are one of my favorite bands, but they do not get hardly any ariplay here or much promotion from their record company. i am not sure why because they are fucking amazing. but i found then right around the release of Aha, and thats because i read an article in rolling stone about them.

  • Must be pretty 'big' with some video tech at NBC's 'Today show'

They used 'Closer'(1:09 min mark), and 'Revelry'(about the 2:35 min mark) this morning on the show. It was in a piece on cheating in Vegas: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/27046225#27046225
It's pretty faint in the background, but you can here it.

I'm digging the new album. Took some time to get into a couple songs...
