Is it a crime to not like Kid A?

I have given it several chances, and I just don't like it. I like their first 3 albums, HTTT is pretty solid, imo, and the new one grows on me with every listen. I just don't get the big deal with Kid A, and as far as rock music goes, I go from one end of the spectrum to another.

Also, don't get the insult that are likely to flood in all b/c I don't like a few fuckin songs.

  • I hate Kid A and Amnesiac. I thought they were awful. Not my taste and I guess I never saw how they could appeal to anyone who liked pre-Kid A Radiohead. I was thrilled with HTTT though as it was a big step in the right direction in my mind. Now with In Rainbows, they've changed course again, but this time I am absolutely loving it! Even with the guitars again taking a backseat, but then I've always been a sucker for string arrangements.

Your dislike for the album deserves two threads?

I don't think people can fully appreciate Kid A and the reason it had to be made like it was until they see the Meeting People is Easy dvd. You literally hurt for the band by the end of that movie.

no it's not a crime at all. You have a right to your opinion, and EVERY band is going to release an album that fans in general are not going to hold superior. Took me 4 years to like 9 songs out of 13 on Binaural from Pearl jam. They production sucks too, which really I think hurt the record, but even more so, some of it's best tracks were B sides.
anyway, on to Kid A and the original topic: I tend to get carried away :o

I enjoyed Kid A, haven't listened to it in awhile, I just have to be in the mood for it. It's got some standout tracks (Morning bell, National Anthem, Everything is in it's place, optimistic) but I just got to be in the mood for it as a listen on the whole.

I personally find Amnesiac to be the hardest one for me to absorb. That's the one that I really am having difficulty truly getting into. It's definitely their most experimental/ complex record for me. That may be a B sides album too though (thought I read that through the wind, but can't remember).

    i just need to say
  • lay off would ya?

id take riot act over that pretentious radiohead tripe any day.

radiohead really get on my tits. they make 3 legendary albums, then disappear up their own arses. not everyone has the time to search for reasons for this happening. and those that do so are in it to try and justify what are basically two shitty albums. if any new band came out with this stuff they would be quite rightly panned. so why let radiohead get away with it?

of course it's not a crime not to like Kid A. It's a matter of taste. It is, however, a crime to like Pablo Honey and NOT Kid A :) Surely, even if Kid A isn't to your taste musically speaking, you have to be able to see it is a HUGE step forward from the generic guitar rock of Pablo Honey.

Case in point, Kid A has 'How to disappear completely', a veritable masterpiece of a song. Pablo Honey has... hang on... wait... no, it actually has no masterpieces.

  • It reminds me of this guy in Dallas that tried to rob Taco Bell through the drive-through on his bicycle. A crime and stupid - j/k. really I'm just kidding, but Kid A and Amnesiac are art work master peices, IMO.

then don't listen to Kid A and stop making threads about it.

the only songs I really like on Kid A are National Anthem, Optimistic, and In Limbo. I much prefer Amnesiac to it. but I don't cry about how many chances I've given it and shit like that.

Just b/c a band has moved on, doesnt mean their old music is generic. Pablo Honey isnt the best album, and time hasn't been kind to it really(you can tell it came from the early 90's), but I wouldnt call it generic, just like I wouldn't call Kid A an experiment that turned out horribly.

If you can refer to old Radiohead as generic, someone could turn around and call the newer stuff overly pretentious. Not knockin just tryin to make a point, just b/c a band has moved on to new territory doesnt mean their old music is rendered pointless.
  • For me... seeing the Kid A material performed live is some more of the reason why I love that album... it's all like electronically done in the studio, but when they perform it live... it sounds better than what an electronic program does... the drums for Idioteque live are just fucking phenomenal. And Kid A live... holy shit, it's sooo good. Plus, that album is just so depressingly uplifting.

But seriously, the jump from OK Computer to Kid A... wow. Pretty diverse. Of course you could hear the hinting at electronica on some of OK, but not like what people were expecting.
If I could, think I would give in.
