about 3x per year, the verve pipe (minus some original members) still get together to do shows....I was never into the VP....just stumbled upon bva by accident. He was an opener for somebody in Baltimore and I liked him.

he still does sing like 2 VP songs at his little concerts and he always sings The Freshmen, which is too sad :(

if I have a class around that time, I cannot go. I would love to go though.
Also, he's on first I think. He's not the headliner.

i've seen him twice in VA (gravity lounge) and he's been great both times. I was in college in MI when the freshaman really broke big and saw the VP play a couple times. He def delivers each time he plays.
make sure the fortune that you seek...is the fortune that you need
  • Man, i used to love Verve Pipe. Remember when he went into WRIF and played Photograph solo on a tiny casio keyboard? that was awesome, lol. And Cup of Tea? That fuckin rocked.. that whole album did except for that damn Freshmen song.

I remember they used to tour with Tonic a lot. I always thought those bands careers so closely resembled one another's. Both had a couple songs that pretty successful on rock radio in.. ohhhh... '96. Verve Pipe had Photograph and Cup of Tea... Tonic had Open Up Your Eyes and Casual Affair. Unfortunately it was pretty downhill from there. VP's next single was Freshmen, and Tonic's was If You Could Only See... and the next thing you know... well, top 40 radio stations and girls-not-old-enough-to-drive here we come! It's a shame too.. I really enjoyed Villans. I even remember hearing some shit about VP was pissed about the record company wanting to follow Freshmen with Penny is Poison, and Van der Ark thinking that another soft song was a bad idea.

Odd that most of his gigs are in Cali and Virginia, eh? Gimme a bar appearance in Lansing and i'm there.

I wasn't into the verve pipe back then....but I loved Tonic. The only VP song I ever heard on the radio is the freshmen. Since I've been a fan of his since 2005, I did buy one of those greatest hits VP cd's. I like cup of tea too. I love his cd from 2005, Resurrection.

I thought he has played in Lansing, oh well....he's playing in Grand Rapids. He did one of those "demand" things online where you could request that he play in your city. It may still be on his myspace.

when you were there, wildchildrose and her roommate, my husband and my coworker came.... (we had a big table but we could not find you) he co-headlined with that guy David Meade. The first time I saw him at jammin' java, he opened up for Ari Hest. But when I saw him in the fall in Frederick, MD he was on second.

  • I have seen Brian Vander Ark twice in Madison, WI and both were great shows. Both of his solo releases are highly recommended. It's a shame that more people don't go to see his solo shows. I think there were a total of 25 people that saw his two shows in Madison (combined). His most recent show featured him on guitar and another guy on keys. It's a combination of Verve Pipe and solo songs with a few covers. He did a fantastic cover of Thunder Road by the Boss. I saw the Verve Pipe back in the day and while that was good, this was a real treat.

The first time I saw him I was blown away at how good his voice sounds live. He's severely underrated as a singer/songwriter.

Oh yea, longtime guest in the forum and first post...not sure why it took so long to chime in.

I think he's a great singer/songwriter. Loved his Resurrection CD... I think my favorite song is from the last VP album -- the title track, Underneath. People who classify Verve Pipe and/or BVA as a one-hit wonder are sorely mistaken.

Just a few days ago I had to drive to Inianapolis, took 31 straight down...and I was thinking of that song near the end of Villians where he mentions the same highway (but the section he's sing of is somewhere along Lake Michigan -- near Traverse City maybe??).

I never even heard of the verve pipe back in the day. I stumbled upon him by accident at a concert in 2005. It's sounds funny to me when I listen to clips from the cd you mentioned. I love his solo, live version of "gotta move on." Have you heard his live cd? It is called Within Reach. He might have a newer one out, but I fail as a fan and have not bought it! Maybe I'll get it if I can go see him 4/26, it's up in the air right now...

That would be the beautiful "85 on 31". I love Brian's stuff but if I had the money I myself would pony up the money for TVP to make another album. It's a crime they got pegged as a one-hit wonder but I still love the fact that the band gets back together once a year or so for a show in Michigan
  • A.J. Dunning was awesome! He's a great guitarist.

I still listen to the Verve Pipe all the time. Great band.
