I haven't been able to get into anything they've released since the debut for some reason but that's a fantastic album. They're good live too but you'd best make sure you know all the words or you'll get some funny looks from the faithful in the circle pit :)

Im a recent convert too via the New Wave record which is my top album of the year (with biffy clyro). Dont think new converts go down too well with the hard core but who gives a shit when you get into a band eh?
Also got hold of the last album which is also good and am going to pick up the live in london when my e-music renews.
Saw them live couple of weeks back - a riotous show.

I heard about that :D apparently he slammed some starbucks worker's head into the counter or something? I want to know what a supposed 'anarchist' was doing in Starbucks to be honest :p

  • These guys are my favorite band ever. (Sorry PJ). I've seen them 7 times now, and they always blow me away. I'm one of the "hardcore" I guess as someone said earlier, but I don't hate on them for their success. I think that they're a modern day Clash, and deserve all the success in the world. I even have "Walking is Still Honest" tattooed on my arm with a rose around it. It's more of a personal thing than a tribute to the band, but they coined it best I suppose.
    Yeah...they're awesome hehe.

it wasn't anything even close to a starbucks- I love rumors- haha. It was this little hole in the wall sandwich place that also sells coffee. The kid that got his head slammed was a puss that started the whole thing.

I heard a song of theres and they surprised me at how good and catchy i found it was.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

not Starbucks. A local place called All Saints Cafe:

    ********
Altercation leads to arrest of Against Me! singer on charge of battery
    Tallahassee Democrat (FL)
    August 15, 2007

The lead singer of the punk band Against Me! was arrested Tuesday morning following the band's show at the Beta Bar.

Tallahassee police filed a battery charge against Tom Gabel following an altercation before the show at a nearby coffee shop where a customer alleged that Gabel shoved the man's head against the counter.

The four-member band from Gainesville released its first album on a major label in July. It was listed as one of the top 25 greatest live bands last year by Spin magazine.

Onstage, Gabel told fans he was upset about having to go to jail afterward and that the whole thing was about people accusing him of "selling out" now that the band signed to a major label, said Spike Mott, 30, a bouncer at the Beta Bar.

Before the show, Gabel walked into the All Saints Cafe, 903 Railroad Ave., with his girlfriend.

Gabel ordered a lemon-ginger tea and headed to the bathroom, said Cody Cook, a barista at the cafe. On the way, he saw a flier with words denouncing the band with a caricature of him scrawled on it.

Gabel, 26, told police the obscenity made him mad. He grabbed the flier, crumpled it up and threw it in the trash.

Michael Hurley, 22, who was at the cafe with friends, said his friend Jared Smith, 22, asked Gabel why he tore down the article.

"(Jared) wasn't trying to provoke him or fight him at all," Hurley said.

    Gabel started yelling at Smith.

"Jared said, 'This conversation is over.' Tom said 'I don't think it is,' " said Cook, 21, a friend of Smith.

Smith told police Gabel knocked a cup out of his hand, grabbed his neck and forced his head into the wooden counter.

Gabel admitted to police he knocked over Smith's cup, but denied hitting him.

"Jared had no idea who this guy was," Cook said. "Tom just assumed everyone knew who he was."

Gabel was released on $500 bail.

  • That's crazy that Tom Gabel did that. Against Me!'s live shows have been so emotionless and passion lacking these past few years. They were awesome during their Reinventing and even Eternal Cowboy days. Ever seen Searching for a Former Clarity their music and live shows have been horrible in my opinion. It's sad to this. I am not pointing my fingers at them for "selling out" or anything like that either I just feel that lately they have been little emotion behind their work. Back in the day they were amazing, fun, and on a mission. I feel like the band feels a little guilt for signing to a major label (again I don't care if bands are on major labels). Their DVD We're Never Going Home, which is great is all about major labels asking them to sign and they just took their free stuff basically and told them to fuck off and then a little while later they end up signing to a major. I hope they get their old feeling back because at one point in time they were amazing.

I wasn't there, but I have good friends who are fans of the band. My wife is from Gainesville, so she knows a little bit about them.

The news story was just a blip on the radar, but it stuck in my memory. It caused me to watch their performance on Letterman about a week later. I kinda liked what I heard, but I can't say it compelled me to dive into their music at all.

She's from a line of 'Noles fans, so it's not so bad.

Going to Hogtown for Thanksgiving should be a good time :( At least the in-laws live away from downtown/campus. Unless we really feel like asking for it on Saturday, we shouldn't have to deal with the jean-short-wearing, mullet-sporting, throw-eggs-at-your-car set.

  • I'm a huge Against Me! fan. I've seen them 8 times now, and I'm seeing them next month opening for the Foo Fighters.

Reinventing Axl Rose was my favorite full-length album, but the Disco Before the Breakdown EP was their best work in my opinion. Only three songs, but all of them were excellent. A lot of people consider New Wave a step back, but the album is still full of well-written and catchy tunes. They still put on one hell of a live show, and seeing the smiles from Warren and Andrew through the entire set just make you feel even happier to be there. For any Foo Fighters fans heading to shows this winter, be sure to get to the concerts early to see Against Me! While I doubt it will be the same seeing them in a large arena rather than a small venue, I can guarantee they'll play with a shitload of intensity.

Pearl Jam is my favorite band of all-time, yes, but at the moment, Against Me! is on the top of my list.

I was a HUGE Against Me! fan. I don't mean to sound like a dick, but their stuff started out great, I honestly thought they would lead a whole new era like Nirvana did (I still think they could have) and then this last CD was just a bunch of generic songs (with one or two exceptions). I think they just took the wrong path.

So I guess I'm just a casual fan now?
And before his first step... He's off again...

I saw Tom Gabel in NYC last night and it was a real good show. I'm kind of a newbie on the Against Me scene, only started listening to them this year, but I dig their stuff.

I was never a MASSIVE fan so the move to their more recent sound didn't upset me greatly, I just don't listen to it, but I know what you mean. Reinventing Axl Rose is amazing, As the Eternal Cowboy is good, then they sort of went in a direction that doesn't interest me at all.

    Still worth seeing live though.

Dig the early stuff, don't really care for the more recent albums.

But they're absolutely fantastic live! Saw them last year and it was an incredibly good show!

I'm not saying this to be a dick, but can someone explain their appeal to me? It all just sounds like middle of the road pop-punk to me.

Again, not trying to be a dick
Hello, I love you. Won't you tell me your name?
  • Americans Abroad is on my shortlist of go-to songs for any rock-the-fuck-out moods that hit without warning.
Also included: The Bronx - Inveigh, Clutch - The Mob Goes Wild, Electric Six - Mr. Woman, NIN - Somewhat Damaged.

Yes, there will be a quiz.
  • I saw them open for the Foo Fighter in Toronto and I've been hooked since...but i will say that I owned 1 album of theirs before I saw them live and i hated it.....but once i heard the songs live...well....i've said enough.

Have you heard their earlier stuff?

It's not so much pop-punk as folk-punk and it's far from middle of the road.
