  • going to see sparta in london ont. on the 16th, playing a tiny club "Call the Office" holds like 100 people...should be good time, anyone in the detroit/toronto area should definitely try and make it to this show as the venue is super intimate

yeah I tend to lean towards Sparta, ever since they opened up for Weezer back in 2002. GREAT show!! :D It was their first time out as a band and they only had Austere to back them up. Texas boys done GOOD! :) I am hoping to catch them when they come to SF in Nov:)

The Mars Volta, I like some of their songs, but yeah, I still do miss ATDI a lot:(

  • Seeing Sparta on the 21st. Should be a pretty good show, 'specially for just $12.00. I love bands that sell their shows for that much. I mean, that's mainly because they're usually smaller venues for smaller not-as-popular bands, but yeah... also, have you guys listened to Threes? It's quite possibly their best work. I love it. The first song is a very good beginning song. And yes, I'm leading more towards Sparta with the new releases of each ATDI branched band... The Mars Volta is just getting way too eclectic in their sound, making all these background noises before the actual song starts... with Sparta, at least they'll rock it out. Don't get me wrong, TMV is definitely a good band, but with a 4 minute intro of birds chirping, they aren't my favorite of the branch.

And yes, we all miss At the Drive-In the most :'(
If I could, think I would give in.
  • Saw Sparta open up for PJ back in '03 and they didn't do anything for me. Nothing about their music stood out to me as being any different then most of the other crap you hear on the radio these days.

The Mars Volta on the other hand are anything but derivative. These guys are probably one of my favs right now. Just saw them play a solo show in the middle of their tour, and they are insane live!

Oh, and I don't miss at the drive in at all, sorry.

I'm hitting the Sparta show at Irving Plaza in NYC, definitely looking forward to it.

Have you ever seen live videos of them? They were by far the best band in the late 90s early 00's at a time when mainstream music was maybe even worse than it is now! Them and early modest mouse were great anyways imho.. I still think In Relationship of Command is one of the greatest albums ever and even more still because it never got much attention at the time so I can still listen to it now and never ever get sick of it.

  • I really think In Casino Out is better. I love number 4... Napoleon Solo.

I was actually kind of joking since everyone was saying how much they missed them. To be honest I haven't heard too much of their stuff, but since I love the Volta, it's hard for me to be sad about their split. I can see why people who were big fans would be though.

I'm like cubbieblue82. I had heard a little ATDI and thought it was good hardcore, but I think the Mars Volta is so much more. They're probably my favorite new band of the last 10 years, maybe more.

In/Casino/Out is a great album aswell, one I haven't listened to in far too long.

I hadn't listened to any ATD-I in a long time, and I put in Relationship Of Command last week and I remembered how good it is. Seriously, it's just awesome.

I do miss At The Drive-In, and would have loved to see them live, but I also love The Mars Volta, and am greatful for the chance to see them.

I really don't care for Sparta at all.

oh yeah girl, HUGE fan of ATDI!! LOVE Relationship of Command. I remember when One Man Army started to get radio airplay (aside from college radio) and when their video hit MTV, they announced they were going on hiatus. Then it was indefinite hiatus after that. Don't you all remember they were suppose to tour w/Rage during that time?

  • Dude, I don't know if you've seen both bands live, but once you do, you'll like the Mars Volta a lot more than Sparta. I saw them live in Chicago a couple of weeks ago, so intense. Sparta's just bland, while the Volta is a total head-fuck in the rockingest way possible.

That is a very accurate statement. I think I"m going to get Amputechture (or however its spelled) - I've seen them open for the RHCP 4x now since 2003, and I'm finally coming around. Sparta was okay - saw them open for PJ in 2003;TMV are a LOT more sophisticated.

Do you mean One Armed Scissor by ATDI? Not trying to be a smartass, just want to make sure because I think that's what you were thinking of.

haha. yeah, that is what I meant. I think I was thinking of something else :p oops. :o my bad. Coating of Arms is another great song people should check out by ATDI if they aren't familiar with them. :)

i'll be seeing them the night before here in Toronto at the Opera House...saw them there the last time they were in town, always a solid show...Tony Hajjar is a fantastic drummer...

and i think comparing TMV and Sparta is like apples and oranges, just can't...both bands do different things and shouldn't really be compared to each other...you have to be in a certain mindspace for either one, but i personally can get into both (as well as ATDI) when i want to...

yup one armed scissor was amazing when I first seen it.. but people wanted blink 182 not real music.. if people weren't so stupid they could have exploded.. and the doors would be open for good music like the early 90s.. of course the band didn't want to explode either

I remember rage and ATDI were on tour and both bands broke up around the same time me and a buddy were making plans to go see that show..... we were choked :(

Anyways I have seen mars volta open for SOAD and they were amazing although the crowd were fuckheads. I really need to see em in a club.. or perhaps VEGOOSE!!

I love Mars Volta but I have to agree here... I really think it's because both of us were listening to ATDI before they broke up.. i LOVED this band in high school and they were so refreshing with all the mainstream shit at the time.. mainstream music in the late 90s and early 00s might have even been worse than it is now. well its like comparing 2 different kinds of shit one which influenced the other.. lol

  • ATDI was amazing...but props to TMV for doing something new and innovative. Sparta...while their first record was pretty good...went down the drain once their guitarist...old ATDI bassist...defected to TMV. Even he saw that Sparta are lame now. TMV are just fucking sweet though.

ATDI is the only band i regret not seeing live and Relationship of Command is one of the best albums ever!!! My first TMV show was right after their first album came out, i saw them (July 2003 i think) in Philly at the TLA... this show ranks among the top performances i have ever seen. For the main set they did the entire first album, and for the encore they did their ep! I remember them walking off stage like zombies because they didnt have any energy left.... amazing... When Sparta open for PJ and they were ok.....
