What bands' later albums are actually better than the early stuff?
I'd say this is true for most bands that came out in the late 1960's. Their work in the early 70's seemed deeper, stronger, and hold up to the test of time better.
I don't see that at all. Granted 10,000 Days is far better than Lateralus, but what's with all the drawn-out noise shit that dominates their records now? I much prefer a song-oriented album like Undertow
This is nonsense; Lateralus is their best album and one of the best of all time. 10,000 Days is their worst-not very many real songs on their. Anema a close second.

Pink Floyd

ill add The Doors to that list. Ill take Morrison Hotel & LA Woman over the debut & Strange Days.
Hehe, i notice that NOBODY has suggested REM or U2!
No one likes the pre-Anselmo days but the one Glamtera album they did with him is listenable, in a really shite way I mean, people who have only heard Vulgar Display onwards would never believe he could sing like that.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

I personally see it as unnecessarily extended self-indulgent boring crap. Its far from being well-written or even interesting...save one or two songs. Some bands do that sort of thing well. Tool, for me, does not. I know popular opinion since it hit shelves in 2001 has been to call it an "innovative masterpiece" but I just don't see it.
This coming from a huge fan of Pink Floyd and their 12+ minute epics.

It's really not...
Besides, if people have heard Cowboys they'd KNOW he could sing like that.
Been to this many PJ shows: Reading 2006 London 2007 Manchester & London 2009 Dublin, Belfast, London, Nijmegen & Berlin 2010 Manchester 1 & Manchester 2 2012...
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
I have to put Sonic Youth in this category. Sister & Daydream Nation are both good albums but most of their other early records kind of suck. Everything since Murray Street has been great though. Especially Sonic Nurse. Throw in Thurston's solo record and you can see how much they've evolved.

Confusion is Sex and Bad Moon Rising are far superior to Daydream Nation in my opinion.
I like noise. Swathes of noise, tearing at my flesh and whipping through my synapses.

Down on the Upside and Superunknown are both later Soundgarden albums and they are awesome!
I would not put those ahead of Badmotorfinger though. I know most would, but BMF has been my favorite album for 16 years. They are, however, definitely better than Ultramega Ok or Louder Than Love, or the Sub Pop EPs.
Ultramega's production isn't that great. The vocal on Flowers is so tuned down, I can't hear any of the lyrics.
However, Incessant Mace is a masterpiece.
For later albums try Camper Van Beethoven's 'New Roman Times' - a million times better than their earlier work. Reason for this is the humble computer and the pro-tools programs used.

I dunno, if I ever throw on a Nirvana album (which isn't very often), it's nearly always Bleach or occasionally Incesticide.

the early trees stuff (before Lanegan got his voice) is pretty bad. But Core/Purple are better than anything that came after.

Agreed! Core was the STP album I liked. And as far as the Trees, even Lanegan has admitted those SST albums were wreck.
Hmm, my favorite STP album is probably No. 4.
However, I agree their early material is generally better than their later material.

the New Pornographers.....Challengers and Twin Cinema are better than Mass Romantic and Electric Version
the Decemberists.....Crane Wife and Picaresque are way better than Castaways & Cutouts and Her Majesty
and they all eat rainbows and pooh butterflies!
