I saw the Moody Blues kind of as a fluke thing at Radio City Music Hall and I was really impressed!
Other than Pearl Jam, from my experience these bands put on a great show:
Black Sabbath (saw them in '99)
Rush
Live (or at least they were good in the 90s)
NIN
Foo Fighters
Queensryche (saw them just this month)
Metallica
Primus
Tool
Neil Young and Crazy Horse
Backseat Lover (Pearl Jam tribute band in Boston)
Here are some that come to mind, although these are shows that really stick out more than bands:
Black Crowes - 10/2005 on the fall leg of their reunion tour.
Jamie Cullum - 9/2006 (anyone ever heard of this guy; he's more of a jazz guy but it you do to one of his show; you'd be hooked for life - guarantee it!)
Living Colour - 4/1993 on their "Staind" tour. Bad Brains opened, and it was a show I'll never forget
R.E.M. - 9/1995 during the "Monster" tour. My first R.E.M show; they had a lot of energy on the heels of the Monster album. Radiohead opened.
Nine Inch Nails - saw them twice in 1995, once on Valentine's Day and again with David Bowie. The way the show was set up in which NIN's set faded into David Bowie and the two of them singing "Reptile" together was unforgettable.
U2 - 12/2005 towards the end of the Vertigo tour. Seen them twice before, but this show was clearly the best. Contrary to what someone else posted, they were mixing their set lists up more during the Vertigo tour. One of the encores was "Instant Karma".
Nobody cares for NIN? The show I went to last year ranks at the top of my list.
I do! They became my second favorite band this year based on the strength of the live shows i saw. I am eagerly awaiting if and when they'll tour in the US in 07. (They're touring Europe - Feb-April 07 and he indicated that wasn't all)
Springsteen is another great live band.
R.i.p. Rigoberto Alpizar.
R.i.p. My Dad - May 28, 2007
R.i.p. Black Tail (cat) - Sept. 20, 2008
Your list rules, and the fact that ACE FREHLEY solo is your #1 is awesome. I too saw ACE in '94 on that solo tour. I saw him in a hotel bar here in Cincy (lived elsewhere at the time, we drove up), and it was great. He opened with "Rip It Out" that night. What a magical show.
And he saw Michael Hedges. I don't know anyone who can say that.
Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
That tour (and the Vapor Trails tour preceeding it) was just awesome. I think I saw something like 8 shows on the 2 tours combined. Rush is my other Pearl Jam
Every time somebody asks this, I come up with something different!
I've seen a lot of shows since 1967, and some great ones, but when I think back on memorable shows, the first thing that always comes to mind is:
Seeing Jimi Hendrix in Philadelphia. I've never seen so much power and energy come out of a trio and I'll never forget that. Unbelievable and unforgettable.
Then The Rolling Stones in 1972. Pure raw energy.
The Talking Heads in the early 80's. I was living in Los Angeles then, and we were at one of the two shows when they did "Stop Making Sense".
Jethro Tull in the 70's
Pink Floyd. Always a great spectacle!
U2 is so great live. Like A Surprise Left says, they have a way of bringing a good feeling and making you feel like you're all sitting in their living room.
This year, Radiohead at the Tower Theater near Philly was amazing. A small 3000 seat venue and they took us all along for a ride through the clouds and out of this world, and dropped us off back at the venue at the end of the show. 8) I think they're the most amazing live show around now.
One of the most moving shows I've seen was Neil Young sitting with acoustic guitar at the Tower Theater for a couple of hours. There is something about Neil acoustic that just sends me every time.
I have to go with PJ. We've seen hundreds of shows from the 60's on and they just are #1 in my mind.
I do agree with you on the Stones. Saw them in 1972 also, wasn't a fan, thought of them as an "old" band-lol-but came away a fan. Neil Young is another I agree on. We've seen him numerous times, and it's always a great experience. He can tell a story like no one else. We saw Jethro Tull, later though, and although the music was good, he was kind of whiny. Pink Floyd was great as well. Jealous about Hendrix, never did see him. My hubby got to see the Doors twice no less, and I'm very jealous about that as well. Of course, he doesn't remember much of it. haha. Would love to see Radiohead, but they have never played in our area. We also loved Green Day in concert. Don't own any cd's, but live they are great.
"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." "If I don't lose control, explore and not explode, a preternatural other plane with the power to maintain." "Yeh this is living." "Life is what you make it."
I missed Blind Melon's last show ever - Cal Expo, Sacto, CA - they were opening for the Zepplin No Quarter tour. We were boogie'n up from SF and missed them open - No Quarter was pretty cool, but I was bummed to have missed Blind Melon... And then SERIOUSLY bummed to have missed them a few days later.
Thanks for the props -- I love concerts, love the experience (Just got my Blue Man Group: Megastar 2.0 tour tix). Yes, Hedges was phenominal, small theater at Stanford U. Played Watchtower and Come Together and all his best stuff. I was in the 2nd or 3rd row, toasted off a few bottles of wine with dinner... I think I started having flashbacks or something cause I was just giddy through the whole thing....
Most I've ever paid for a ticket? I won't say (but the $150 for Bridge school this year wasn't close) -- 8th Row in Front of Alex for Vapor Trails.
But with all that -- nothing comes close to the experience of literally being blown away by Ace. Screaming to my friend squashed next to me, he couldn't hear me. And I've seen a lot of music in small clubs, The Stone in SF in Particular, the Kabuki, Ruthies, Cattle Club sure...
The sound was physical, just pure physical....
WORST SHOW I EVER SAW: There was this string of concerts in Oakland 83-85 where it seemed like Uriah Heap opened for everyone. Uriah Heap and Def Leppard was awful. The sound system was shot, and Mr Lead Singer sez "You want us to turn it up?" And they did, pure fuzz, sounded like a big ol' rasberry all night.
But that wasn't even close to the worst -- I think the Flaming Lips opened for them, and I had no clue who they were, but they did OK, and then, Berkeley Community Theater, after the Lips out comes ... Love and Rockets. SOOO freakin excited, had a D5 and mics in the 10th row or so.
And they just absolutely stunk the place up. Made up most of the lyrics, made up most of the songs I think -- they were just soooo wasted and just ... silly. Sounded like crap. It was ridiculous.
Bush a;so put on good shows back during the sixteen stone and rzorblade suitcase tours. I didn't really dig their techno stuff like the science of things.
I've been lucky to see some great shows, but here a few that come to mind right now:
The WHO in 1989, played 38 songs, 3 and-a-half hours. The show was at Veterans Stadium in Philly, which is one of the worse places to see a concert, but this show was unbelievable.
The WHO in 1982 at JFK in Philly. Just a kick-ass show. Was the craziest crowd i've been in, as ther was OVER 100,000 people. I was about 5 yards from the stage. We got ther around MIDNIGHT to start our partying.
The ROLLING STONES in 2002, at the TOWER THEATER, UPPER DARBY, PA. A 3,000 seat Theater. I paid an arm-and-a-leg to see this show, but it was worth every penny. I was lucky enough to get the BOOT from this show a month ago.
CROSBY-STILLS-NASH and YOUNG, 2000 at the First Union Center in Philly. I was really surprised how good this show was. They played 29 songs with the last song being, "KEEP ON ROCKING IN THE FREE WORLD". They were excelent with ther classic harmonizing voices on the acoustic songs.
RUSH, 2002, at the First Union Center in Philly. I'm not a BIG Rush head, but these 3 guys jam ther asses off. Neal Pert is worth the price of admission, as he's probably the best drummer i've seen.
YES< at the Spectrum in 1984. I sat FRONT ROW, right in front of Chris Squirer, who's the best bass player i've seen live(well, maybe its John Entwistle>LOL), but were splitting hairs here.
ECHO and the BUNNYMEN, 2003 at the STONE PONY ,in Asbury Park N.J. I heard so much about the PONY, with it being where SPRINGSTEEN use to jam alot, but i never been there. Man, what a hole-in-the-wall it was, but i think that kind of appealed to me, and the BUNNYMEN jammed.
CREAM, 2005 AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN. I never thought i'd ever get a chance to see this trio, and man i could'nt beleive how well they played. Eric Clapton was terrific.
PEARL JAM, 2005 at the BORGATA in ATLANTIC CITY. I've ALWAYS been a BIG Pearl Jam fan, but never saw them untill here. (I hate that place in Camden N.J.as that seem like the ONLY place they were playing, and i din't want my first time seeing them in that HOLE, and thats why it took me SO LONG to finally see them). And what a treat for my first time seeing them. Holds 3,000 and the acoustics are excelent. 3 hours of JAMMING.
PEARL JAM, 2005, at the WACHOVIA CENTER IN PHILLY. I'm always having a debate on whether this show or the Borgata show is my favorite, but i don't think i went wrong with either show. The set-list was amazing with Crown Of Thorns, and some other that i NEVER expected. Mike McCready was incredible that night.
ROGER WATERS, 2006 at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN in N.Y. Played the whole DARK SIDE OF THE MOON album in order. Need i say more.
As i said i've been lucky to see some great show, and i'm sure ther some more i could list. I do get asked ALOT who is the best Bands that i've seen, and i tell people that PEARL JAM is the BEST BAND TO SEE IN CONCERT.
Jamie Cullum - 9/2006 (anyone ever heard of this guy; he's more of a jazz guy but it you do to one of his show; you'd be hooked for life - guarantee it!)
.
I'm gonna see him next week here in Luxembourg. Heard that his shows are amazing. Think that the new cd is great.

You can tell a man from what he has to say - Neil & Tim Finn
They love you so badly for sharing their sorrow, so pick up that guitar and go break a heart - Kris Kristofferson
The best gig I have seen was AC/DC at Birmingham NEC, we were well and truly pissed by the time we got there and gig was amazing. Songs such as Highway to hell and thunderstruck were awsome. I've seen many bands and my top 5 are:-
1)AC/DC
2)Pearl Jam
3)Black Crowes
4)Faith No More
5)Burning spear
