Anyone else into their music? I just started liking them. I guess I'm a little late. I bought "Ghost in the Machine" a few weeks ago and liked it so much I bought their other four albums today.. I've got a lot of "new" music to absorb right now! :)

The greatest band ever!!:D IMO. You will not be disappointed. Reggatta is my personal favorite. The one regret in my life is never seen them live. It's too bad you bought the albums individually because they have a box set that includes everything they recorded including their first single "Fallout".

EDIT: I just looked at your age. Christ I'm old. You were born at the same time the band was born.

Also, Stewart Copeland released a movie "Everybody Stares" which is comprised of home movies he made while on the road with the band.

I like Andy Summers's work with Kevin Coyne, but I never cared much for The Police.
  • No, they suck.

If the Police "suck", I'd like to know what your definition of good music is, so I can weight the validity of your opinion.

Yes, they were a great band.............Yes, they were fantastic live the one time that I saw them........Spring of 1982 on the Ghost in the Machine tour, (my favorite album). Joan Jett was the opener.
All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed.

I have no definiton. It's like the judge who said something along the lines of I'll know if it's obsecne when I hear/see it. I consider music "good" when I listen to it and like. It's that simple. I can't give you an equation of what equals "good" music.

The Police had SO MANY 'hits' while i was growing up, (way back in the 80's!) that i couldn't help but like them. After you've explored the Police catalog, i would recommend Sting's solo cd "Ten Summoner's Tales." It's very mellow, but not so much so that it will put you to sleep. I used to listen to this cd alot during my college days while i studied.
  • If you pick up the box set, you'll ve very satisfied...it has all of their albums, b-sides, demos, etc. Excellent stuff.

  • Synchronicity's pretty rocking as well. I just recently got into them as well... not sure, but I just love the music.
If I could, think I would give in.

  • I got that box set too. However their legacy is not great. Their albums never get mentioned in the best of lists. The Clash(same time period) get much more critical praise. I dont like Andy Summers on guitar, Id wager Sting ditched the band because he got sick of playing with him. Copeland is still a great drummer, thats the biggest shame in my opinion, after Police broke up not having opportunity to watch this guy play the drums.

The Police was a great band, but The Clash they were not!
(not that they tried to be)

Like any great band, many of The Police's best songs weren't necessarily hits, yet their string of hits are undeniably incredible.

  • Love love love the police

Sting walked by me at my job, I mumbled turn around and sing :)
  • The police are/were one of my favorite bands of all time! I had the chance to go to Andy Summer's book signing at the EMP last month- he led such a fascinating life and interestingly enough, the book was damn good. I do dig his guitar playing, but of all three band members, Stewart Copeland is my hero (or was, until I heard the avocado- now it's matt cameron.... But I still hold Copeland high up there because he is a badass drummer).

I even rocked my Synchronicity tour shirt at the first Pearl Jam Gorge show this year. Because the police rock. And..... Andy Summers DID mention that he and Stewart Copeland jammed recently- and that the possibility of a Police reunion in the near future was not toooo too far fetched... I am keeping my fingers crossed...

Yes, I think your right.. I like The Clash more than the Police because they are more punk and dirty but must admit that The Police were better musicians the sound was more cleaner... they took it more seriously....The Clash also had a more revolutionnary songwriting (think pf "guns of Brixton") who wasn't perfect but fir me and surely an ten tousand The Clash were great too...........
Beavis : Is this Pearl Jam?
Butt-head: This guy makes faces like Eddie Vedder.
Beavis: No, Eddie Vedder makes faces like this guy.
Butt-head: I heard these guys, like, came first and Pearl Jam ripped them off.
Beavis: No, Pearl Jam came first.
    Butt-head: Well, they both suck.

Love 'em! As a drummer, it doesn't get much better than listening to Stewie Copeland. He is really one of the best.

I respectfully disagree with you on this one .
If we would attribute the breakup to any inner- band personal issues , I'd say it was due more to the fact that Sting was clashing ( pardon the pun ) with Copeland . These guys are very very similiar and have similiar personality traits ( like control, maybe ? ) I remember even seeing an interview where Copeland threw water into Stings face, and they proceeded to get into a wrestling match - all on camera- as Andy just sat by as the innocent bystander . I also know that Andy has gone on to do alot of Producing in the Music Industry .

As much as I would love to see a reunion, I just dont see it happening . Sting has gotten to big for himself, and his ego has surpassed his desire to share the spotlight with 2 other musicians onstage .

Andy Summer's work with Robert Fripp(King Crimson) is very trippy.

From what I've heard, the only thing stopping a Police reunion is Sting.
    WTF?
What else is he doing...because it appears that his "solo career" is a bit quiet right now? I don't get it...

Sting and Stewart do play nice with each other. When Sting got married Sting, Andy and Stewart borrowed the band's instruments and started playing. Sting's quote and I'm paraphrasing "The song started and I looked at Stewart and those old emotions came up." Sting and Stewart are both too head-strong to tour or record. Well, I think Stewart could compromise but Sting will not.
  • The Police have some good shit.

    One of my favorites.
Oh he fills it up with the love of a girl...

GREAT band.

back in the day...i had just about anything anyone from the band produced...musically or otherwise. have to say, andy's not a half-bad photographer either.

lucky for my hubby i never got to meet, and thus marry as i always planned to ;), stewart copeland. :D

and yes, the collaboration between fripp and summer is excellent stuff. the police were a very rhythym-driven band, understandably with a singer/bass player at the helm...but summer's guiter riffs added unmistakable, and SO necessary, flavor to the bass/drums driving the band's work.

    *edit - damn typos...spelling...pathetic grammar! :o haha.
