Nothings wrong with Pearl Jam, I just want a new band to listen to. I like indie bands like clap your hands say yeah, arcade fire and psych-folk/new weird america bands like devendra banhart, panda bear, joanna newsom and jambands like the dead, allmans, tea leaf green. I also like ryan adams and wilco alot. Anybody got any suggestions?
I’ve seen Pearl Jam 25 times, Eddie Vedder 9 times, and Brad once.

  • Gov't Mule if you like the Allmans. I don't like any of those other bands you mentioned, so that's about all I can recommend.
  • honestly...i know they get SO MUCH talk around here but you really need to listen to the white strippes catalog...it doesn't get you at first, but after a week or so, you fall in love...atleast I did

My 'other' bands right now are, Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Mother Fucking Stone Age, The White Stripes and Radiohead.
Allen Fieldhouse, home of the 2008 NCAA men's Basketball Champions! Go Jayhawks!
    Hail, Hail!!!
  • I know you want "new" bands but big record labels screwed it up for everybody. You're going to need to get into The Replacements, The Beach Boys (1960's only) and maybe some Killers or Ours, otherwise there's nothing.

The arrogance and ridiculousness of this statement cracks me up. You need to get into three bands, otherwise there's.... nothing?

Totally agree with the Replacements quality band! Anyone who has'nt heard them check out the albums: Pleased to Meet Me and Let it Be. Alex Chilton, Can't Hardly Wait and Bastards of Young are all awesome tracks!

Do you listen to Uncle Tupelo? They broke up in 1994, but if you like Wilco (and Ryan Adams) you must hear this band.

You might also want to check out Califone. A very cool mixture of Americana, rock and electronic noise. I own and love the albums Roots & Crowns and Quicksand/Cradlesnakes.

  • Band of Horses is a good newish band. Their first album still gets tons of play at my house.

I've also been listening to John Vanderslice a lot lately. He just put out a new one, called Emerald City. Don't have it yet, but that's only because he's playing around here next month, so I figure I'll just pick it up when I see the show. His website has a shitload of mp3s, including selections from some of the records, the complete first album, a complete remix album, and a live show. Probably other stuff I'm not thinking of, as well. With that much free stuff, it won't hurt to check him out, if you haven't already.
Statistically speaking, you're more likely to be pitied by Mr. T than you are to have feet.

Band of Brothers are excellent! The Funeral in particular is a great song.

The Funeral is the song that introduced me to them, and it's definitely a great song. I think my favorite track on the record (subject to change, of course) is Monsters. I love the way that song builds.

I still haven't seen them live. They played here back in March, but it was on my wife's birthday, and she's not into most of my music. She said I could go, but I figured I'd be better off missing it and not providing fodder for some unrelated argument two years in the future. ;)

Are you in the UK? Cos I'm off to see a few of those bands at the Greenman festival, can't say I'm up on Devendra Banhart or Joanna Newsome, but they're both playing-Going to see Sir Robert Plant personally, but I guess I should enjoy those others. As for suggestions, well I'm well up on Damien Rice's stuff-top quality! And for fun I'm listening to The Fratellis. JUK

based on the bands you (fotd) mentioned, I would HIGHLY recommend:

    the Decemberists
    Great Lake Swimmers
    Handsome Furs

these bands (along with Arcade Fire, the Postal Service, Interpol, Editors and the New Pornographers) are my current obsessions

"Hospital Music" has got me listening to a lot of Matt Good again, amazing record. I've also been on an ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead kick lately so I've got to reccommend them. And of course, you can never go wrong with the New Pornographers.
    Which came first,
the bad idea or me befallen by it?

  • Idlewild .... Enough said. They just played a show with Pearl Jam. There is a reason eddie vedder said they are the best band that no one in the us knows about. Ask some other members on here. They are one hell of a band. What does everyone else think about Idlewild.

^I like Idlewild but i do not think they are the best band no one had heard of.

I really like most of those artists you mentioned so maybe rufus wainwright (i think he is hugely underrated), the decembrists, fionn regan. i have too many to name.
