I started with his live album "Live From Mars", honestly it ruined his early albums for me. After hearing the emotion he has live I couldn't get into the studio versions of those songs. From there I got a couple of his earlier albums, but like I said, hardly ever listen to them since I prefer the live versions. I got "Diamonds on the INside" which is terrific and his new one which isn't quite as good, but still worth hearing.

Get the live album first, that's what I did and I have been a big fan since.
  • I agree, Live From Mars is simply amazing, I like all of his albums, Welcome To The Cruel World, Fight For Your Mind, and the Will To Live tend to be more folky and political, Burn To Shine and Diamonds On The Inside are more funky and a little more emotional, and then he kind of combined the two styles with his newest album, Both Sides Of The Gun. Personally, Ben Harper is one of my all time favorite artists if not my favorite, I think his work is amazing, it is diverse and intelligent, he has something to say and does it very well, I say start anywhere I don't think you can go wrong.
I was taught a month ago to bide my time and take it slow, but then I learned just yesterday to rush and never waste a day. Now I'm convinced the whole day long that all I've learned is always wrong. Things are true that I forget, but no one taught that to me yet

    Dude.

Start with Fight For Your Mind.

    Please.

Then you can hit Live from Mars...but every fucking song on FFYM is incredible.

On that note, I'm off to Burn One Down.

  • Live at the hollywood bowl is pretty good and pretty available. Although I cherish this live studio performance he did in France that I have on bootleg. Its fantastic as well.

Start by checking out a concert too if you can. He is scheduled to tour pretty aggressively this summer. I'll be seeing him in Bend and also Berkeley this year, saw him in Portland last year. His live shows are amazing and cannot even be totally captured in a bootleg. The show I went to last year was about 2Hr 45 minutes long. After about a set, the band leaves and Ben plays solo for about 45 minutes or so...then the band comes back on and gets back to the task at hand (as ed would say in Boston). Its really a great great live concert and worth every penny his 35-40 dollar ticket costs.

I started with Fight for Your Mind, and in retrospect that was probably the best one to start out with for me. That would be my suggestion.
