I got my first mp3 player a few weeks ago... I did put one free song on it so I understand the most general concept of downloading but I'm not to sure about places like napster, itunes, rhapsody and the like....is there a place you can go to and legally download a song (and pay for them one by one) instead of joining their service...it seems like itunes and others all want a monthly fee...

How do you do it ????? Please provide links to...

there is no monthly fee for iTunes. You just sign up for an account, if you bought an iPod, it comes with the software. You can buy songs one by one from them, or by whole albums.

    I use torrents.

Amazon has tons of single song and album downloads in MP3. No monthly fee. No DRM (digital rights management) issues to worry about (ala Rhapsody or iTunes).

There's a getting started tab there that should answer any questions, but it is the best, least restrictive, most universal download service out there as far as I can tell.

For major-label releases I use amazon.com. You get high quality mp3's, there's never any protection on the files, and the price is usually better than iTunes. I check their "Deal of the Day" first thing every morning for some really cheap stuff.

For independent music, and the majority of my downloads, I use http://www.emusic.com. Again, you get (relatively) high quality mp3's with no DRM, and depending what package you go with you can get songs for as little as 25 cents each. This site does require a subscription, but I've never had trouble using up all my monthly downloads.
  • thanks everyone...spinal frog and amazon seems cool i'll check those out a little more......till i get an ipod:).....
  • You can try going to dogpile.com and searching audio for whatever you want then saving it from there.

another super-cool site for discovering music is http://amiestreet.com/. it's also really cool how they run their site, with pricing and stuff...check 'em out...
  • type song or album title in google search, accompanied by "megaupload" or "rapidshare" - free music. anything you could ever possibly want. no sign ups. no fees. no waiting. no drm bullshit.

paying for music these days is like buying oxygen. makes no fucking sense except as a show of support for small-scale artists.

Check out your local library.......they have better stuff than you would think and will probably take requests in what to get......you might have to wait a month or so to get what you want though

You want to purchase songs?

I've not paid for music in about 7 years - apart from a few albums that I've wanted a hard copy of - Pearl Jam e.t.c - along with some old vinyl records.

I was thinking the same thing today...like what's the difference between putting a cassette tape in a radio and pressing record and downloading a song from the internet...

I just remember them going after people who didn't pay for downloading music a few years ago...i don't want to be one of them...
  • Since I'm in college, we're provided with a music download client called Ruckus... it's actually quite nice, doesn't have everything you're looking for (like obscure bands), but it's definitely kept me well fed with music. And everything is organized by artist, etc... not like Limewire, where you type in the artist then you have to search through everything to get all the songs on the album and actual songs instead of viruses, other songs, whatev.
If I could, think I would give in.
