I have a thing for certain second verses of songs; some just sound so much better and more powerful than the first verse. Here's a couple that i love...

"I see a woman in the night
With a baby in her hand
Under an old street light
Near a garbage can
Now she puts the kid away,
and she's gone to get a hit
She hates her life,
and what she's done to it
There's one more kid
that will never go to school
Never get to fall in love,
never get to be cool." (Rockin' in the Free World)

I especially love the above verse on the Touring Band 2000 DVD. The way it kicks in and the way Ed sings it blows me away every time.

"Truly, truly we have become
Hated and feared for something we don't want.
Listen. Listen. Most of us believe that this is wrong." (My Morning Jacket, 'Gideon')
"This town deserves a better class of criminal... and I'm gonna give it to them."

Quite possibly, the best verse ever written.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

Blister please with those wings in your spine
Love to be with a brother of mine
How he'd love to find your tongue in his teeth
In a struggle to find secret songs that you keep wrapped in boxes so tight
Sounding only at night as you sleep
In my dreams you're alive and you're crying,
as your mouth moves in mine soft and sweet,
rings of flowers around your eyes and I'll love you
for the rest of your life, you will see.

The most unconventional yet mindblowingly brilliant description of love I think I have ever heard.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"

RITFW was what immediately came to mind before I even clicked on the thread.

    Some others...

    Nas - Life We Chose

"What's love when you don't give your man enough dough?
    He wanna stick you
    What's love, you got beef?
    Nobody rollin' wit you
What's love, you locked up, and your family don't care
Is love a four-letter word, that deceives the air?
What's real? When you know your man's girl is a hoe
And you don't even let him know, cause you fucked her before?
What's real? When you talk behind a man's back
then you see him and give him dap, now explain that?
What's trust? When they separate your case
When you at your court date, your co-de', can't look in your face?
What's trust? When you keep your wife away from your man?
And he never crossed you, but you claimin' he's fam'?
What's trust, when you get bust, your niggaz don't retaliate?
They blaze purple haze with em the next day?
God forbid one of my niggaz get hit, I'ma go haywire
    Won't hesitate, I'ma spray fire
But everybody's different, you won't know how you react
til you in that position, and that's an actual fact
The hearts of men change as time goes on, who's wrong?
You was hungry when you stuck Duke, he came back to buck you
Who's wrong? Foul all your life, now you 90
On your deathbed you regret being grimy
    What's lust - a bust nut? What's a thug?
A ghetto child raised around drugs, 'til he's old enough to bust slugs?
Then what's jail, to rehabilitate, or to make a nigga worse
when he come home to catch another case?
Life's about decisions, you choose it, you gotta live it
You did it, heaven or hell or prison
Who knows when your clock'll stop tickin', get your weight up
Save up before it's over neighbor, I told ya
You gettin' older player, look at those who gave up"

The second verse of One Mic is also powerful.

    Alice in Chains - Nutshell

"My gift of self is raped
    My privacy is raked
    And yet I find
    And yet I find
    Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
    I'd feel better dead"

The MTV Unplugged version of that was chilling.

    Alter Bridge - Blackbird

    "The fragile can not endure
The wrecked and the and jaded a place so impure
The static of this cruel world
Cause some birds to fly long before they've seen their day
...long before they've seen their day"

And the third verse to that song is even better.

    Pearl Jam - Indifference

You know the words. Sing along.

Hearing that part live and singing along was the highlight of my concert-going experience.

    Brand New Sin - Wyoming

"Out here will I die alone
    Never laid to rest
Another passing man kicks my bones
Buck-wild will my ghost ever pass"

    Love that verse.

    Gangstarr - Moment of Truth

"Sometimes you gotta dig deep, when problems come near
Don't fear, things get severe for everybody everywhere
Why do bad things happen, to good people?
Seems that life is just a constant war between good and evil
The situation that I'm facing, is mad amazing
To think such problems can arise from minor confrontations
Now I'm contemplating in my bedroom pacing
Dark clouds over my head, my heart's racing
Suicide? Nah, I'm not a foolish guy
Don't even feel like drinking, or even getting high
Cause all that's gonna do really, is accelerate
The anxieties that I wish I could alleviate
But wait, I've been through a whole lot of other shit, before
So I oughta be able, to withstand some more
But I'm sweating though, my eyes are turning red and yo
I'm ready to lose my mind but instead I USE my mind
I put down the knife, and take the bullets out my nine
My only crime, is that I'm too damn kind
And now some scandalous motherfuckers wanna take what's mine
But they can't take the respect, that I've earned in my lifetime
And you know they'll never stop the furious force of my rhymes
So like they say, every dog has it's day
And like they say, God works in a mysterious way
So I pray - remembering the days of my youth
As I prepare to meet my moment of truth"

There are probably some others that I can't think of right now.

Saving everybody takes a man on a mission
with a swagger that can set the world at ease
Some believe it's God's own hand on the trigger
and the other dumping water in the streets
Talking tough is easy when it's other people's evil
and you're judging what they do or don't believe
It seems to me you'd have to have a hole you're own
to point a finger at somebody else's sheet
-"A Ghost to Most" Drive-By Truckers

Great verse right there... Mike Cooley is a lyrical genius
"I know I was born, and I know that I'll die, but in between is mine..." Ed
