I like collective soul, the killers and muse of those all. For Muse get Absolution, for the Killers get Hot Fuss and for Collective Soul start with their greatest hits. Muse is huge in Europe for a reason.
Seven Mary Three had a few good songs such as "Water's Edge"
  • Better Than Ezra - Ahaha.
Seven Mary Three - They were good like in 1995.
Collective Soul - Used to be good.
The Afghan Whigs - Pretty good.
At The Drive In - Fucking great. Also try The Mars Volta(Cedric & Omar's - lead singer & guitarist - new band. At The Drive-In are more punk though with MV being more psychadelic and progressive rock)
    Taking Back Sunday - Blah.
    Yellowcard - Blah.
Muse - Never could really get into them. They have a couple of cool songs. Wasn't a fan of their set at Lolla.
Spoon - Awesome. Their new one, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, is one of the albums of the year. Also recommend Kill The Moonlight and Girls Can Tell.
    Keane - Never really listened.
The Killers - Never a fan. Seen them live and they didn't impress me. Apparently their new album sucks though.
Wallflowers - Old school. Are these guys still around. Dylan's son is the lead singer.
Local H - I used to be a big fan, but haven't listened to them in a while. Still good shit. Bound For The Floor is an alt rock radio classic.
    Sponge - Never heard.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - I liked their first album, after that they didn't impress me. Not too good live either, the couple of times I've seen them.
  • MUSE! Try out Black Holes & Revelations, stellar album. Or any of their albums except Hullabaloo, the b-sides compilation. It's possibly not the best starting point, though it is very good.

I already love The Mars Volta and Sparta. So, I guess ATDI was a no-brainer for me....thanks for all your input.

ATDI is phenomenal. Their last is probably their most popular, it's Relationship Of Command. Vaya, an EP before that, is also really cool. The albums before that, "In/Casino/Out" "El Gran Orgo" and "Acrobatic Tenement" are a bit more in the punk vain...but are all freaking amazing.

Better Than Ezra - Deluxe was kind of a nice album. If I remember correctly there were definitely some throwaway tracks in there, but a few catchy ones as well. I didn't keep up with the band after that CD.

Wallflowers - Another mid-nineties band I didn't keep up with after their big album (Bringing Down the Horse), BUT it's just within the last two years or so that I rediscovered that CD and came to appreciate it more than ever. It's sort of a rootsy pop-rock album. I'm pretty sure I like every song on that album. I intend to catch up on their other albums eventually.

Collective Soul - I was a HUGE fan during middle school/the mid nineties. I have to say that nowadays Ed's voice bugs me, and in my opinion the lyrics are pretty cheesy. I remember the first time I heard "December" - to me (about 13 years old) that was a hard rock song. Let's just say I eventually grew out of that band. However, if you like the radio hits you'll probably like the albums, so why not go for it? They know how to make catchy pop-rock songs.

Spoon - Finally a band I really like right now! They play catchy, quirky songs that make you want to dance. I do have to say they're a bit hit or miss for me, but even the songs I didn't particularly like at first are growing on me. I definitely recommend these guys.

BRMC - I've had their self-titled album for years. I really wanted to like it, but for me the songs started to run together into a muddy mess after the fourth or fifth track. I keep thinking about trying another one of their albums, but I just can't see spending the money when I'm not all that fond of the one I've got.

How about the band "Hot Water Music"

BRMC are one of the best bands I have ever seen live, I highly recommend all their albums but you should start with Baby 81.

I agree, from what I've read on this board you really like them and I can see why. Baby 81 is a great album.
  • That's a strange list.

Spoon and At the Drive-In are worth mentioning though.

    Especially Spoon. Great band.

Only heard the singer Chuck Ragan's solo live record which is pretty good. I have a friend who likes HWM. He recommends them.
"I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"
  • I have added Explosions in the Sky and Medeski, Martin & Wood.

It is my civic duty to tell you to go and purchase any Local H release you can get your hands on. They rock AND will hang out with you after a gig!
"Hello Oregonians. Hello Washingtonians. Hello Portland..where the fuck are we? We're in Ridgefield!"
  • skip every band on that list and go buy a Jane's Addiction CD and a Pixies CD.

Preferably one of the first 3 albums by either of them.

    :D

Look, i'm just saying, if you're looking for something different ... whats up there isn't it.
And judging by your curiousity about bands like ...Ezra and 7M3, i'm guessing you're too young to have heard them in their hayday and be burnt out on them.
So go give REAL bands a listen before you dive in to mid-90s sloppy seconds.
    :D

I will say that Afghan Whigs have some merit, but were never my cup of T. a bit TOO rough around the edges.

Black Rebel has some decent material, but i wouldn't say "great", and i've had friends that like Local H, but i also have friends that thought Jane's Addiction sucked, and think X is the worst band ever, so ...

If I opened it now would you not understand?

i think Muse are sensational. the whole "If Andrew Lloyd Webber made a rock band" feel to them could be offputting, but i still keep going back to their first album "SHOWBIZ". Very rough compared to the more recent stuff, but great. Some very heavy songs, some ballads, but nothing OTT like recent albums.

very good way to get into them.

I always thought Collective Soul was a good band that got a bad rap. I think their early material is quite good, but that they were marketed incorrectly as a "grunge" band because they came out right after all the Seattle bands got big.

From the OP's list, Collective Soul was the only band I ever really liked. Although I do like a couple of Better Than Ezra and 7 Mary 3 songs.

Start with As Good As Dead........love this album. They are actually from my area. Fritz Corner (a song from the album) is a pub about 5 minutes from my house.

Better Than Ezra- pretty bland pop rock in my opinion. You can live without them

Seven Mary Three- the first wave of second rate pearl jam bands. still have 3 or 4 songs i like but you can live without them.

Collective Soul-bland rock again here nothing special

The Afghan Whigs- Getting better. Gentleman is a very good album. Gregg Dulli does some good stuff.

At The Drive In- You really should give their last album Relationship of command a try. I seriously love the album and it would make my top ten albums that have come out since 2000.

    Taking Back Sunday-not good

    Yellowcard- not good

Muse- i like them a lot they are worth checking out. good songs on every cd.

Spoon- I like them but i don't love them. they do pop indie rock very well though.

Keane- I have a keane album i listen to two or three songs from it. It really is not that impressive.

The Killers- some okay songs. not really my thing

Wallflowers- never was impressed with them at all.

Local H- i never gave them a fair listen. I like some of what i've heard though.

Sponge- A couple decent tracks nothing to get excited over. Pretty average.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club- Some talent here. I tried to get into them but they are just not my thing. Not a bad band but not a band i dig.
