I dont care for the group of people that the band attracts but they are all very sound musicians.

I'm really starting to like Phish. I stayed away mostly because of the hippie thing, but then someone gave me a few tunes and I really liked the guitar, much more than I thought I would. Then I picked up an album and the rest is history. I own 3 of their CD's now, and Anastacio is a really cool player.

    Ben & Jerry's Eh?? ;)

I've really been getting into Phish lately and just saw Trey a few weeks ago in Toronto......he's amazing.

Right now I only have Farmhouse, Round Room and The Story of The Ghost but hopefully more to come soon :)

I understand how they aren't everyone's bag because of the jams and stuff but I really do like them. Great band.

Me too ... I got into their stuff this summer, both early stuff like Lawnboy and the later stuff like Farmhouse. I have slowly waded into the live stuff, but its intimidating. :)

I just saw Trey Anastasio open for Tom Petty this last Friday in Dallas, and I have to say I was impressed. I'm not sure why, but I just never got into the college radio jam band scene like widespread panic, string cheese incident phish ect... but about 6 years ago my cousin who is a big phish fan and a few of his friends put in Billy Breathes and I have to say it was good stuff. I only have Billy breathes and farmhouse at the moment.
I got this off of http://www.treyanastasio.com:
for anyone interested here is the Dallas set:
    drifting
    sand
    sweet dreams melinda
a case of ice and snow
    heavy thoughts (from farmhouse)
    dragonfly
    shine
    come as melody
    first tube (from farmhouse).

4 of these songs should be played in order because they segue into each other:

    Bathtub Gin --> Uncle Pen
    2001 --> Mike's Song

I went to see Trey last night in Ann Arbor and he was on fire!!! The first set he ended with Plasma which was insane, the best part of the show for me was the acoustic encore, he came out and did ...

    Inlaw Josie Wales (Acoustic)
    Sample in a Jar (Acoustic)
    Wilson (Acoustic)
    Chalkdust Torture (Acoustic)

The place was just nuts during the entire encore, Wilson was great and the place was jumping during Chaldust Torture!!! Here's a link to the full setlist...

The territory they enter around 9:00 in this jam is just bliss. I am not normally a fan of this era of Phish, being more of a 91-97 kinda guy, but this jam just owns. Trey just 'gets' it around that 9:00 time. It's a cool jam up until then and then, I don't know if it sounds corny, he just reaches down and together with the band there is a 2 minute span of them just approaching some totally different level. It's just awesome.

If you have to go the studio route, get Rift, Hoist and A Picture Of Nectar. Then try checking out Junta and Billy Breathes

I think a lot of people avoid Phish because of the percieved image they had, and their jam/hippie band status.

What they might not realize is that Phish was actually an amazing "Rock" band, with albums to prove it (i.e. Billy Breathes).
“I know this song so well, I can smoke a cigarette, have a drink, brush my teeth, take a shit, and mow the lawn while singing it. But I'll only be doing a couple of those things during this version.”

    100% exactly.

The whole "I hate the hippie scene, Phish sucks" mentality cracks me up. You don't like the fans so you think the band sucks. I see...

Oh well. All the more for us.

Phish still fuckin' rock. I have now heard the entire 2003 winter tour. And now its hard to listen to other bands. No one can touch them.

    You're right.....that was fucking bliss!

I too hate how people have such a negative view about Phish just because of their following, as if I'm a hippy just because I listen to Phish. It's ridiculous.

And that's after just winter 2003. Try any tour from 91-95 (ok, maybe even fall 97) :)

I saw some great post hiatus show in 03/04, but I miss the frenetic old-style Phish of the early to mid 90's. To me that is the essence of Phish. A band firing on all cylinders, trying anything, tight as hell, and just living in the moment on a nightly basis.
