John Rutsey, a founding member of Toronto rock band Rush, passed away May 11th according to Rush's management company Anthem Entertainment. He was 55.

Rutsey was famous for playing on Rush's 1974 debut album, including the song "In The Mood" before deciding to leave the group due to health concerns. Rutsey suffered from diabetes and was unable to go on extended tours with the group.

Rutsey was replaced by drummer Neil Peart, which marked a turning point in the band’s sound towards progressive rock.

WOW, I just read an article where Alex Lifeson said he used to talk to him all the time and work out with him as Rustey was now a body builder, but Lifeson said the he stopped talking to him in about 1995. Man this is a SHOCK I'm a HUGE RUSH fan, god bless his family.

Isn't life weird in that J. Rutsey's decision to leave the band brings in NP and 2nd favorite band takes off in a universally popular direction.

RIP....JR and I wonder if that guy who came up with the concept for the song *Tom Sawyer* gets royalities every time that song is published or recorded?

Rock on RUSH I'll see ya'll 7/19 Bristow, VA.

    Peace

It's amazing what someone leaving can create; imagine Rush without NP. Some things are just better; like the death of Andrew Wood; though tragic, it gave birth to something so much better.

Was it Pye Dubois who wrote Tom Sawyer with Neil? I used to be so up on Rush.
This is really sad, he was only 55.

Pye DuBois is a Canadian musical lyricist. He has worked with a number of bands, including Max Webster and Rush. Drummer Neil Peart gives credit to DuBois on some Rush songs including the "quintessential Rush song" (as quoted by frontman Geddy Lee) "Tom Sawyer." Pye DuBois also wrote the poem "Between the Sun and Moon", which inspired Peart to write many of lyrics for the album Counterparts including a song called Between Sun And Moon. He is also credited as a contribiting composer on the song "Test for Echo."

Apparently *Tom Sawyer* wasn't the only song he's been credited with. It looks like he hit it big with *Tom Sawyer*.

As a fan from the early days, this is really sad news. R.I.P John Rutsey.

Pye Dubois wrote most of the lyrics for Max Webster, a most underated Canadian band.
