Got a Drum Set for my Birthday.....

AWESOME....

I play guitar and my wife got me a drumset for my bday.... It is a beginner set and just has a bass, snare, floor tom, another tom, and hi hat and cymbal....but I LOVE IT>.......


any suggestions on songs.... or where to start....

    I find that watching dvd's and concerts really help on picking up stuff.

    Get some lessons. If you're at all serious about it, the lessons will give you rudiments (flams, rolls, ghosted notes etc) that you can use in many songs, as opposed to just trying to match beats on your own.
    If idle hands are the devil's workshop, he must not be very productive.

    Lessons are always good. A basic drum beginner book goes with that, as does reading music.
    There are tons of great lessons on youtube for drums, which is great as transcriptions are thin on the ground.
    I have found that general leg strength and fitness is really important for drumming.
    Music is not a competetion.

    But really, I'd invest in a pair of hearing protectors, like found at a pistol store or home depot, and put ipod earbuds in there, and play songs you like over and over again. It's how I learned, except swap out an ipod for a record player. :)
