I'm considering getting a new ride for my set. I never really liked the sound of it. (Original Paiste Alpha) I am really starting to like the sound of jazz rides but Im not sure I want a legit jazz ride. Does anyone know of a good yet somewhat affordable ride that can be used for jazz and rock? The only ones Paiste really has are the Traditionals, which are about $400-500. WAY too expensive!

  • I'd personally recommend the Zildjian K rides. They're also kinda spendy (good brass always is), $300-400 or so. The big question is whether you want a strong ping (rock), muted ping (jazz), or somewhere in-between. Also, do you want a bright, sustained wash, or do you want a dark, diminished wash? There are a lot of K rides, so there are quite a few variations to choose from, but I think they walk that line between rock and jazz really well. A lot of indie drummers (who tend to blend jazz and rock styles) really like the Zildjian K's.

Jason McGerr, who I think really blends rock and jazz styles, has been a long-time Paiste user. I think his live kit uses the Twenty-series ride, but don't quote me on that. I know he owns a ton of drum stuff, so on the albums, he's probably using whatever he likes best for the track.

Unfortunately, it can take a week of playing on a cymbal to decide whether or not it fits you, and there aren't a lot of shops willing to lend you a good piece of brass for that long. But if you have a bigger store with a good selection, see if they'll let you take it overnight for a trial with your kit. You never know, maybe they'll work with you.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

I dont want something too dry. It has to have some sustain when I hit it. I also wnat something with a nice bell. IMO Paistes make the best rides and their bells are incredible. I want a rock sounding bell. If money were no option I think I would get this one:

That K custom dry ride next to it is too dead sounding IMO. If there are better zildjians, tell me some. It seems Zildjians are less expensive anyway.

  • I have a Sabian 21" HH Vintage Ride. I highly recommend.

Good ping but not too much. Nice, vocal bell that can get several different sounds depending on how it's hit, and AMAZING crashability.

  • I'd re-iterate my recommendation of the Paiste Twenty series, specifically the Light Ride:

As for Zildjian, it sounds like you would enjoy the K Custom and K Custom Dry Rides. Good bell, good sustain, but still responsive to stick dynamics. The A Sweet Ride, A Custom, and A Custom Sweet Ride cymbals may also work for you, but they're slightly more pop-rock.

Then again, if it's bell tones you want...

lol, I dont want bells literally, just a loud pingy one for the ride.

Id like to stick with Paiste, since all of my others are Paiste. I happen to like the Twenties quite a bit. I tried the normal ride and liked it alot, as well as their splash. (Try the twenty splash one day, easily the best sounding splash Ive ever heard) Ill see about the light ride. Plus, the pricing on the twenties are reasonable.

Im a noob to Zildjian, I would have to see. Gutar center doesn't even seem to carry much of the crazy Zildjians. Just the crappy ones, the A's, and the K's. Not too much or even any K customs that I can remember.

Thanks for the clips. Ill be checking some out.
