How do you determine which pedal fits into the modulation catergory?

anything that modulates the signal cyclically.

    phasers, tremolos, choruses etc.

i guess even things like wah's and envelope filters might be considered modulation as, even though they aren't cyclical, they are modulating frequencies etc. dynamically.
  • Does is modify your sound?

If you follow the general rules of pedal order, basically everything after your OD/Distortion pedals is modulation.
Auto Wah pedals (like the Boss AW-3 or MXR M-120 Auto Q) typically fall into this category as well.
I place my traditional wah/uni pedals in-line to the amp from the guitar.

  • It's worth noting, however, that a lot of guitarists prefer to put mdoulation pedals such as vibes first in their signal chain.
