What's the best bassline in your opinion. If there were one song that the bass is most prominent. I guess what I'm looking for is a song that could be played on just the bass alone and you would know what it was. I was thinking maybe hitchhiker or animal. If you have a good tab please post or link it.

Primus? I could never attempt to be that insane on a bass. He's incredible!

He is fucking incredible, but so is Cliff Burton and I can play well enough to cover (and immitate) his material. It's all a matter of style. Funk bassists should be able to cover Les without great effort I imagine. On that note, Jeff is an amazing bassist, but since I play a similar style as him, his work is easy to cover.

I would personally go with Bushleaguer. Great bassline and great lyrics.
  • I think he is underrated. I hate to go hippy on you, I'm a WSP fan, Dave Schools is pretty tight too. "Big whooly mammoth" is funky.

On a non-pj related note, listen to Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He's amazing. Listen for the slap-bass in "Higher Ground."
If idle hands are the devil's workshop, he must not be very productive.

  • Song that you can recognize just from the bass line? Sympathy For the Devil, Interstate Love Song.

Any Led Zepplin song has strong cool bass lines. I have a problem with songs having over the top bass lines, songs that the bass gets away from what it is really there for.

Pearl Jam wise, one of my favorite lines is from "Get Right", just fantastic. Also "Army Reserve"

Anything written by Steve Harris of Iron Maiden (esp Phantom of the Opera on their 2nd album). That guy was my idol back in the day. As for Pearl Jam, I like Alone - that song just grooves.
