Thinking about slotting a P90 pup into the neck of my Viper. Genuiene gibbos are more than I want to spend. I have seen DiMarzios which are OK in price. I have heard the name Fralin too, but don't know anything about them.
Any insights welcome.

  • If Gibsons are too expensive, then Fralin pickups are probably too much as well:

That said, I love my Fralin P-90's, and I think they're among the best out there for a vintage tone with a great bite and snarl.

If you want a budget choice, DiMarzio's are a great option, but Seymour Duncan would be my preference:

They have a typical Vintage P-90, a higher-output Hot, a modified high-output Custom, and the humbucking Stack (all of the "soapbar" models, the first 4 on the link).

    Good luck with your hunt!

My dad got a brand new Gibson P-90 for $50 because some guy took it out of his LP doublecut as soon as he bought it, and the tech called him up when my dad was looking for a P-90. It sounds excellent.
Believe me, when I was growin up, I thought the worst thing you could turn out to be was normal, So I say freaks in the most complementary way. Here's a song by a fellow freak - E.V

Thank you god, turns out teh shops in teh US can't send DiMarzio to austrlia, but they can send SD, which starts to narrow the field a bit.
What do you think of the stacked ones ? Does it change the tone much ? I would probbaly be playing clran to pushed on it rather than distorted, so uhm is probbaly not much of an issue.

IMO, Jason Lollar P-90's are the final word for soap-bar or dog ear's. If you want a humbucking sized P-90, Fralin and Harmonic Design are the only way to go.

Again, just my .02. They're all a bit spendy, but they're the bees knees.

THank you enharmonic, it was oppinions I was after, so don't apologise. I probably should spend the biscuits on a decent pup cos the rest of my tone gear is good, and it would be silly to sacrifice that just to save a few bucks.
I'll have a look around to see what Fralins cost. It's actually cheaper for me shop in the US on-line for this sort of stuff by a long way usually.

Have just had a look, I can pick up a Fralin for $80, which is $100 Australian. Considering a GIbson is $300 in Australia, I'm gonna call that a bargain, and definitely go for the Fralin, on everybody's strong recomendation.
