  • 1. What kinds of venues are you playing?
2 (depending on 1). Are you just running vocals through the PA or everything?

Truthfully . . . it's going to sound like crap - the 8" speakers will sound way small, thin, and cheap (laughable) - plus the 150-watt PA isn't loud AT ALL (yeah it says 300-watts, but that's only 150-watts to each speaker, and PA watts aren't the same as guitar amp watts). This is NOT a PA for a band - it's more for a solo acoustic player, speeches in a small room, or maybe a toast at a wedding - if you're singing in front of a band you'll need more power and bigger speakers.

This mixer is a basically a minimum starting point: http://www.dawsons.co.uk/musicstore/s45398/0/Mixers/YAMAHA/Yamaha-EMX512SC-Powered-Mixer/details.aspx?&comp=y (the 500-watts a side is at 4ohms, so it's actually only around 330-watts a side at 8ohms) - I'd recommend you get something that pushes even more (if you can) because you'll really be pushing the 350-watts a side with a rock band (since most halfway decent speakers start around 350Watts and peak around 700Watts-1000Watts).
Try to understand that a powered mixer like this http://www.dawsons.co.uk/musicstore/s83256/0/Mixer-Amps/BEHRINGER/Behringer-PMP1280S/details.aspx?&comp=y may say it's 1,200-Watts, but that's stereo bridged - it's actually only 215-watts a side at 8ohms (so it actually SUCKS). The wattage of the Yamaha EMX512SC is generally where you'll want to start (minimum).

I'd also suggest you get at least 12" speakers, and typically at least 300-watts a side (per-speaker) - remember that single speakers are 8-ohms, so you'll need to match the watts with 8-ohms (300-watts at 4-ohms is just over 190-watts at 8-ohms, so that won't really work well), and also remember that the easiest way to blow a speaker is to under-power it.

These Yamaha S112V Club Speakers are fairly standard for bands in pubs and small clubs: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-S112V-Club-Series-V-Speaker?sku=601201, (these are probably where you'll want to start - remember that you can always upgrade to better speakers later and then just use the S112V as stage monitors). And if you can swing the ungraded 15" speakers, they do sound a bit better. These are the Yamaha S115V at Dawsons: http://www.dawsons.co.uk/musicstore/s49915/0/Speakers/YAMAHA/Yamaha-S115V-Single/details.aspx?&IsSearch=y&pageindex=1&CatId=1137&comp=y

Anyhow, this all gives you an idea of where you'll probably want to start, even on a student budget.
Otherwise you'll basically be wasting your money.

It's hard to know what you have that side of the pond... around the US, I'd say look at some older used Peavey or Crate PA gear. Not usually great sound quality, but a lot of horsepower for the cost.

I agree that you'll want speakers that have at least a 12" woofer, perhaps even a 15". 500 total watts, or more, is pretty much necessary. I also really like the Yamaha club-series stuff, especially the speakers. I'd put in a courtesy recommendation for the Soundcraft GigRac, as it's a great piece of gear, a truly great value, and it has the output you'll need.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

MSR400's. They're powered. That is my reccomendation.

The Stagepass will not suffice for a rock band. Even the 500 is pushing it.
