One guitar for the rest of your life?

If you had to narrow it down to one guitar for the rest of your life... what is it?

I think I'd go with an Es-446. That would seem to cover a lot of ground.

Or a Paul Languedoc like Trey's

One guitar forever? Say it isn't so.

If I had to chose, American Deluxe Strat.
If idle hands are the devil's workshop, he must not be very productive.

At this moment I'd have to go with my John Mayer Strat.

How is that compared to the American and American Deluxe Strats? A new strat is in my future, and I wanna know my options.

Can't tell you about the American Deluxe as I've never played one, but I have an American and I like the feel and play of the JM Strat more. Its not quite as broken in neck-wise as my American because its newer, but I can't wait for it to get there. I like the sound of the pups a whole lot more too. Plus it just looks damn cool in Gold with a red racing stripe!

my SG standard with a P94 in the neck.
  • If i had to buy a new guitar, it'd be a '62 reissue P bass in White.

Oh yes, it will be mine...

I've narrowed it down to one of these two - it's the same basic guitar.
Both are in a smaller size than standard, but with a few different options.
Both of these are good for almost any style,
Both have a sweet singing tone,
Both can get a nice throaty sound when you want,
Both can achieve nice controlled feedback,
These are also in the color I'd want:

    1). http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?cpd=0OEY&doc_id=99371&g=guitar&base_pid=517183&index=0

This one can achieve an acoustic tone as well.
    2). http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?cpd=0OEY&doc_id=99371&g=guitar&base_pid=519919&index=31
This is actually a dark cherry burst, not tortoise shell as listed.
And after thinking about it I think I'd probably have to go with this one because of the versatility.

That's interesting you picked the 336. My parents want to get me a guitar when I graduate college. They know how much it'll mean to me, especially in the future when i pull it out of the case and i tell my kids "This is what your grandmother and grandfather got as a gift for me when I graduated college" It's probably going to be a 345 unless I change my mind. I've thought about a McInturff or something along those lines but I feel like i need a Gibson for that sentimental moment later on in life.

Yeah - the 336 is a scaled down version of the 335, 345, 355, ect.
I'm not really all that fond of the 345's switching, maybe because I don't like BB King's Lucille (the 345 has the same swiching).
The 5-way switch is kind of a pain in the ass, just like the PRS 5-way rotary (click click click click click until I get where I want).

I like the 336's smaller size - it's a bit more comfortable, and doesn't feed back as much at higher volumes.
It comes from Gibson’s Custom Shop, and with a flamed maple top it still doesn't cost as much as the 346.

But honestly I still like the versatility of the hollowbody I PRS (similar to the 336, plus the acoustic option).
Okay, it's about $1000 more, but I can talk it down to be virtually the same price - and it'll hold it's value very well.

  • I have a big problem buying a gibson, especially with the way they treat the smaller stores in town etc. And how poor quality their $900 and less series are, but I can't live with out this for sure.

I unno, IMO the humbucker ruins the strat look.

Totally agree with you there. Strats should be SSS. My teacher has an EMG in the bridge of his Strat and it just looks odd. Granted he's a total metal head, but its just my opinion.
  • NovawindNovawind Posts: 836
The reason I picked HSS was because I want the bridge to have a little "crunch", just a little more than I would get with a normal strat bridge pickup. On an American Deluxe SSS, all the pickups would be SCN (awesome) but I don't know if I'd get the type of humbucker distortion I'd really want to be able to choose.

And I think because of the S-1 switching, I can turn on just one half of the bridge humbucker and still get the traditional bridge strat sound. Just my reasoning.

  • all you guys choosing electric, were talking ONE guitar for LIFE. haha. i'm choosing acoustic strictly on the LIFE factor.

im going to go SUPER specific for this, and chose my uncles Larivee. It was made in Vancouver when Jean Larivee was still building 2/3 guitars at a time in his garage. It dates to the mid-seventies i believe, and this thing plays music just sitting on a stand. Just imagine a goddess strumming a harp, this is the harp. This is my choice for one guitar, and i would trade up all my playing (not recording gear) to get it

    Harrison

ps: im pretty sure once my uncle gets older i'll get a peice of it. ha!

I know everyone mentioned an electric as their one guitar for the rest of their lives, but I'm going acoustic.

Much more versatile and you can play it anywhere, anytime.

Taylor 700 series. Specifically the 714ce...it is my next guitar purchase. Of course I have to save up FOREVER for it, but it'll be totally worth it.

  • If I was going to be electric for the rest of my life, I think the Deluxe with the S-1 switching, but I think I'd go acoustic and I already have the one I love

My Taylor 414 ce is amazing and it plays better than a bunch of higher end ones.
. If it's the one for the rest of my life I guess I'd take the Taylor acoustic and screw on the Fender Deluxe pickguard with the SCN's and S-1 switching,,,, and maybe put a Bigsby on it, too.

    THEN I'd be set! :D

Wow, pretty hard to answer but i have a Gibson SG Special in the teal and it is the nicest guitar i have ever played. Tone is to die for and it feels so right. So i'd have to go with what i already know and love.

I wouldn't mind one of these little babies though

He's using a Gibson J-160E and it sounds so damn sweet.

Mwuah Bob, you wouldn't! (Either way, you shouldn't)

But I agree, I'd go acoustic as well, and though I wouldn't mind me a Lowden Damien Rice style, I'm actually pretty happy with my old Guild D25. I pretty much know for sure this one is never leaving me in this lifetime.
