ok, my birthday's on oct. 10, and i kno im getting money, cause i told all my relatives thats what i wanted.today, i was playing a bunch of guitars at a local store. i thought i wanted a sg classic, but i didnt after i played it:( and than i played a deluxe ash strat, and i was blown away! it was amazing, i could get so many tones outta that baby. so i figured id buy this one. and just as i was about to leave, i saw a few sgs the employees were just bringing out. the guy said that i could try them out, and i played the 61 reissue. that was amazing as well! i could get that angus young growl, that eric clapton "woman tone", to keith richards to mike mccready tone. i like them both soooo much, but i cant decide which to buy frist(i will eventually buy both lol:)) the sg had more tones, but the strat was a little more comfortable for me(because i am not used to sg's bodies). now my question is this, which should i buy first? thanks!
they call them fingers, but i never see them fing. oh, there they go

+1... Did you try the SG Standard? It may be comparable and I think its cheaper.
I think it's good that you're getting something that you like and will use, and take care of.
I bought my first guitar when I was 12, in 1965 when I saw Keith Richards on TV! I got it with paper route money.
It's wild that here it is 41 years later and you want Keith Richard's sound, too, and he's is still on tour as we speak!!
My first guitar was a 57 Les Paul Gold Top for $250 bucks. It wasn't vintage then, just a guitar that you buy. Man am I glad I bought that thing! I made a career out of playing guitar for 20 years or so.
So if you like the sound of the SG better than the Strat, and the guitar is your style, I'd go for that one. You can get used to the body pretty quickly.
They're both great sit on the couch and play guitars because the cord comes out the front, and doesnt kepp tangled in the couch cushions. Or am I the only one that has that problem?

I'm in the same boat as you are. If you like the RI, go for it. Also remember, you should check out more then Gibson and Fender. Some other brand may have exactly what your lookin for.
But my two cents, I'd go for the SG. I'd get a '61 Reissue if I didn't already have an SG Special.
Why are we so cool?
Oh, I forgot, we both have Teal SG Specials
I can't wait until November when I get my deluxe ash strat ...I will own the name "tone"
tobacco and rosewood
i hate fender maple necks
Yeah, great axe, for sure. One of the things I'm saving for / lusting after is new pickups and hardware for it. I'm thinking a 57 classic in the neck, and a 57 classic plus in the bridge and maybe upgrade the hardware from chrome to nickel, and a new pickguard as mine has a crack around the screw hole, and that just irks me!
I've been kind of digging a MIM tele lately with a maple neck. I never thought I'd like maple, but its growing on me.
Between the two, overall I'd say to go with the 61-SG or SG-Custom (get an SG with a small pickguard or NO pickguard). DON'T get the SG-Special or SG-Standard - they're cheap imitations of the real thing, and don't sound as good (and the pickups are mounted in a pickguard so you loose some of the tone - plastic will do that). The SG has a bit of a better neck (set-neck not bolted on), a smoother feel, and a little more sustain than a Strat (but I would get rid of the top-hat knobs and put on Gibson's speed knobs, overall they just seem to work better).
Remember, you can always do what Jimmy Page did and coil tap those humbuckers if you want a single-coil sound (PRS does this on most of their guitars). Jimmy Page was known to be a chameleon since he could make one guitar sound like another (the coil-tapping and phase switching helped). Yeah, Page used a Telecaster to record "Stairway to Heaven" (and most of their early stuff), but once he got the Les Paul he coil-tapped it so he could also get those Fender sounds.
Anyhow, between the Strat and the SG I'd say to go with the SG - just make sure you really look the guitar over well, and play every single one you're thinking about buying (don't mail order it) - Gibson's craftsmanship has been very "hit or miss" over the past 10 years, and you never know what kind of shit guitar slipped through their quality control (many many more than you think). Remember, you're paying a bit more for the Gibson name (but then again, Gibson's tend to hold their value a little better than Fender's, and Gibson's resale value is better). Cheers . . .

I thought like that when I had about $600 CDN to spend. I was looking at Epi LPs and Mexi strats. Well, the sales guy said, 'Try this Godin'.... I did and never looked back. Seriously, the guitar smoked both of them. sean, I reccomend that brand. http://www.godinguitars.com Killer guitars, killer prices, Canadian/American made.
Hey..I'm 32 and think that if you're working for these or just using b'day money, that's great. You could be doing a lot worse and a lot dumber.
Why not buy nice guitars if you can?
Is Godin the company that makes/owns Art & Luthrie? Just saw that on their intro page.
I haven't seen Godin at any local guitar shops. Would GC carry them? I was thinking about stopping by Bakersfield for a guitar browsing trip sometime this month.
Edit: Scratch that. Just found a shop 30 minutes away instead. Which model do you have?

ha.
Amen to that. I'm still trying to get used to the LP Jr.
I have the Freeway Classic, and yes they make A&L, Seagull, Norman and Simon and Patrick.
well add to the fact that you're doing something that you will do the rest of your life. whereas video games you won't be playing 30 years from now...the guitar you still will be.
