soundwise, what's the diff between 490R/498T and '57 Classics

I am thinking of getting an SG Standard with 498/490 or either an SG3 with 3 '57 Classics. so what's the big difference in how they sound? I already have a Les Paul with 490/498 so I know exactly how they sound. are the '57 Classics brighter, darker, similar, or what?

also, anybody ever played one of the 3 pickup SGs? does the middle pickup get in the way of picking?

  • They're similar, but the '57s don't have the mid-high presence peak of the 490/498s. They're also not quite as hot, especially in the case of the 498, which is substantially hotter than both the '57s and the 490. I personally prefer the 490/498 combo to a pair of '57 Classics, but that's probably more to do with my dark-sounding Orange combo than anything else.
