I figure give the guy at home depot $10 and he'll cut all the wood to my specifications....and just attach some carpeting (anyone know where to get that industrial type carpeting that is used on typical pedal boards)
I'm trying to design mine like those pedal pad boards:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Pedal-Pad-MPS-Modular-Pedal-System?sku=159500
Making mine 2-tiered as well...but instead of the power pad I'm probably just going to use a surge protector and keep it underneath the pedals....I'll post pics when I'm done!

I estimate the total cost to be around $50
Yep mine too. In fact after i moved, the local HD makes all cuts for free, not just 3. You wasted $10.
After "Guitarhero" walked away the HD worker mumbled "Sucker".

the $10 is for actually assembling it for me too!
Just wood, velcro and some labor.

So.. seeing as you're more experienced than I am.. Why do you have it on your board? I haven't used mine in ages because I haven't found a really practical use for it in a long time (since my sound has become more developed and I've bought things like my Tubescreamer).
Unrelated to that.. what do you guys think about getting an old suitcase and turning it into a pedalboard? Think it'd be worth the trouble?

Oh my, they dropped the leash.

Old suit case would work fine and you'll look like Ed!
Pedal power creates little heat so no worries.
There is a band called Lonesome Spurs, check out what they did with suitcases.

The big thing is you have to know how to use it, and you need to work your volume pedal in-between.
You have to play with the level, tone, attack, and sustain to get the right sound -- it takes practice.
Don't turn it up all the way, and only use it when you're playing -- when you're not, volume off it.
I had problems in the beginning so I asked a buddy (Dominic Miller - Sting's guitarist) because he uses the CS-3.
He told me the same thing I'm telling you -- watch your levels, and use your volume pedal.
Since really working with it I'm now able to have both level & sustain around 2-o'clock.
It takes practice, but it's an integral part of my sound.
For the most part compressors are noisy -- it's the nature of the beast.
I've been seriously looking into other compressors too.
Keeley's Compressor http://www.robertkeeley.com/product.php?id=8 - I've heard great things about his compressor.
Also, a company called Moollon supposedly makes a really great compressor
http://www.moollon.com/product/product_comp_e.asp) actually all of their stuff is supposedly good.
When I can find them I'm going to try them myself -- reviews are one thing, personally trying them is another.
You can hear 30 people say something it great, then when you try it you're underwhelmed and wonder if it's just you.
Believe me, give your ears more credit than they deserve.
EXAMPLE:
Lately I've been hearing all this hype about P-90 pickups (this guitar has P-90's in it, wow P-90's, cool P-90).
Honestly, I don't think they're all that great sounding -- they're good for certain situations, not for others.
I personally wouldn't use them in most situations -- but that's just me - I record for a living - I want certain sounds.
Cheers . . .
