Hey im kind of new bass player and i wanted to get a new amp, becuase my old amp is a fairly crapy sound, only had 100$ because i wanted to started off slower to see how i liked bass and what not.

anyways any advice on good bass amps for about 400-600 (canadian) dont mind to much if it used (would lower the prices).

I'm thinking between the ones in link below. but not sure if there is anything better for the price. Just something for practice and local coffee houses and small shows.

If you are gonna keep playing bass I suggest getting a small portable one (10 watts or so) so you can bring a lightweight amp around to friend's houses or whatever, and save for a cabinet and amp head for your official amp. Will be worth it in the end.

Look for deals on Ampeg amps....maybe even try Ebay.
  • depends what you want to do. if you want to play in a band against drums you will need 150+ watts. if you are only playing by yourself or with other guitarists then go something around 50ish watts. (i wouldnt go much lower cause its no fun playing bass if you cant feel it, plus you generally need 3X the wattage of your guitarist if you want to be heard)

if your not looking at joining a band in the near future then just go for a good sounding practice amp and start saving for a nice head and box unit.

remeber to try as much and as many brands as you can before you buy.

    goodluck.

  • Any solid state peavey or ampeg even fender rigs go cheap on ebay. Solid state had a poor retail value.

i'd suggest looking into a gallien krueger 800rb.

i've had one for 20 yrs now and never have had a problem with it.

for dirt,i use an swr intersteller overdrive unit, but i'm sure a good tube overdrive stomp box would do the same thing.

I'd stay away from Fender bass amps... the Bassman amps of 30-50 years ago are no relation to the modern Bassman bass amps.

Crate and Peavey will give you just plain volume for a decent price, and they're reliable and will last.

Galien Krueger amps are infamous for being solid workhorse amps... smack your drummer upside the head with it and keep on playing.

If you want a smoother, rounder tone, look at Ashdown or Ampeg. I personally love the Ashdown practice amps, and they have a 1x15" combo that's really affordable AND sounds great.

SWR and David Eden are more modern-sounding amps, very nice but with a specific sound. Also tend to be kinda expensive (and stay away from the cheap SWR gear, it's not worth it!)
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.
  • Well thanks for advice, i'll take a list down of brands you guys mentions and try to play them all.

I am in a band not big but hope we do get heard, but anyways yeah we are playing a show in decemember for local coffee house so i wanted to be heard, well enough. Read something about specific sound, the sound im looking for is just a nice booming bass with clear tone, i read somewhere that 10" is for tone and 15" is for a nice bassy sound... maybe something like that?
