What is PJ's most poorly attended show/most intimate show?

I am putting parameters on this thread as well. They obviously broke out in 1991, but they were still playing small venues that year. It wasnt until 1992 I would assume that the crowds at their shows started to really get ridiculous.

So between 1992 and 2008 what are the most poorly attended and most intimate shows? Have they played for crowds of 100-1000 in that time span? 2,000? 3,000?

They played Mount Baker Theater in 2000 in Bellingham, WA which holds about 1,200 people. In Seattle The Showbox has been played 3 times since Dec. 2002 and it holds around 1,000 for PJ. Benaroya Hall is about 2,500.

  • Irving Plaza only holds about 1800. That was in 2006. Storytellers and Letterman were also pretty small crowds.

I'd throw some of the Japanese crowds in there too. Those venues were fairly small, plus the Japanese crowds are always so quiet.

  • They played in Santa Cruz at The Catalyst in 1997 on 11/12 to a crowd of 800. It was a warm-up show before they opened for the Rolling Stones in Oakland for 4 nights.. They played around 16 songs and broke out songs from Yield there for the first time...There were only 800 people there because they were billed as "The Honking Seals"..

  • They played Slim's in San Francisco in 1993...about the same size as the Catalyst, maybe a tad smaller, and also as a surprise show. Also, I think it was the first time Betterman was played. Interesting set list that night.

I would have rather been at the Slim's show than the Catalyst show, but the Catalyst show still had 100 fewer people...

An awesome show I'm sure, wish I could have seen it!!

I ran into Robert Plant once in Boulder, CO at about 3 a.m walking down the street by the Pearl St. Mall and I said, "Robert Plant, I just want to shake your hand, you are the greatest.. What are you doing in Boulder?".. He said "I'm playing in Denver tomorrow night!".. I said, "I can't believe I didn't know that.." and he said "Neither can I?".. It was pretty funny..lol..It was great to shake the hand of a legend like that though....

04/29/05 - Easy Street Records, Seattle, WA
    attendance: Approximately 200

Katowice II 2000 was intimate. Played to a crowd of 3000 in a venue that holds about 8000. Great show! Get it if you don't have it.

I was at another show they did at The Catalyst on 10/27/93. I think INTENSE is a better way to describe it than initimate. It was a warm-up show for the VS. tour at the height of grunge-craziness. Everybody in town seems to have been tipped off to the "secret" show and were filling the streets around the club.

I spent most of the show right in front which wasn't easy as a 5ft 3 inch female. A sympathetic security guy actually poured water into my mouth because it was too packed to raise my arms and hold the cup he offered.

Ed came out completely drunk and was drooling onto the stage, sang mostly looking down, and then climbed up to the balcony at the end. It was an amazing performance-they all rocked HARD. Hearing those VS. songs live for the first time ...... I'll never forget.

What about the show at the "Albany" in Winterthur/Switzerland in February 1992? I could kick my ass that I was not there ... The Albany is a small club, for an audience of maybe 400 -500 people. All I've heard about the show is that the band didn't get their equipment on the tiny stage and they had to do something like an unplugged show. Anybody here who attended?
  • If i'm not mistaken, i think Nijmegen '07 was fairly intimate :)

The Birmingham show in 2003 at Oak Mountain (one of the coolest venues in the south) was poorly attended. It probably holds 12,000 and I imagine there were only about 6,000 there. It was around 38 degrees at show time. We had a great time though.

    2006: Antwerp, Paris
    2007: Copenhagen, Werchter
    2009: Rotterdam, London
    2010: MSG, Arras, Werchter
    2012: Amsterdam, Prague, Berlin
    2014: Amsterdam, Stockholm
  • so, easy street, 200 people. pearl jam was 2.5% of the people in attendance. that would've been real sweet to be at. that wins for smallest show yeah?

Easy Street 2005 (wasnt there, but i have been to the record shop, couldnt have fit more then 150-200 in there)

The Vic was pretty damn small (guessing 1500 tops)

The Borgata was pretty damn small (guessing 1500 tops)(eds preset there were maybe 300)

VFC Reading 2004 was a small venue, maybe 5,000

VFC Ashville 2004 was even smaller... size of a large high school gym... i think that was maybe 4000

....and the wind was blowing the whole time. It might be on record as the second coldest PJ show. They sold a bunch of hoodies that night. :D
