Looking for some advice...

I started playing guitar a few months ago on an acoustic and would like to purchase an electric guitar as well. I would love some suggestions as to decent gear for a beginner. I love playing...so I don't need to get something too cheap for fear I'll quit playing, but also don't want to spend a fortune just yet. Anyway, looking for some suggestions. I've looked at epiphone and a few others...
Cheers!

I was going to suggest Epiphone actually...

That's what I have (Epiphone SG-310) and it's perfectly fine for my first guitar but I wish I had spent an extra $100 and got something a bit better.

I would look at the Epiphone SG-400 and even the Les Pauls.....

Mexican Fenders are great for the money too and (correct me if I'm wrong guys but) for beginners you can't tell the difference between an American and Mexican Fender??? (at least the way they play)

What kind of guitars do you like??

What models?? (Les Pauls, SG's, Strats, Teles, etc.??)

I love the look of Les Paul's and the SG's as well. Thanks!

In terms of sound...I like bluesy rock...if that makes sense :-)

Oh it totally makes sense :):)

That's the tone I'm after as well!! (real Black Crowesy :) )

    Anyway though,

I only bought a little 20-watt Traynor amp and it's fine for a first amp but I wish I spent a little more on the amp....

I would spend less on the guitar and put a little more money into a decent little tube amp like the Fender Blues Junior or something....

How much are you looking to spend??

I have the Blues Junior and its a great amp. I'd go with a Mexican Strat and a Blues Junior, but thats just my two cents. That was my first foray into the world of electrics, but it was an American Strat instead.

A Godin of some sort may suit you well. Either the Freeway Classic or SDxT. They are amazing guitars, and blow the fenders and Epis out of the water.

If I were you I would do a couple of things 1) I would buy used gear where possible. There is no need to get a "new" guitar or amp. Plus, in many cases it's just like a damn car. As soon as you walk out of the store with that "new" piece of gear you will never be able to get what you just paid for it. Buying used will give you the ability to buy an american strat or tele, instead of one that is mexican made. 2) Be patient. Search ebay, craigslist, and local guitar shops for the gear you are interested in. Continue to search until you find what you want at the price you want. There is always somebody out there trying to unload great gear for a quick sell, so that they can pay rent.

My suggestion: Used American Fender Tele or Strat $650; Used or New Fender Blues Junior Amp $300.
And if hope could grow from dirt like me, it can be done
