I know their contract expired with Epic, but why not just stay on that one?
J records did promote the record more than Epic ever promoted a PJ album other than Ten, but the album basically tanked in terms of what J records thought it was gonna do. It didnt inspire millions of kids to go and get the record.

I think it came down to the fact that everyone they knew on the business side of Epic was gone, and they weren't happy with it. So they lasted out their contract, and considered going "indie". But I guess signing up with J for a 1-record distribution deal made sense from a business perspective.Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.0
