Has the music ever helped you through something?

For me its hard to pinpoint one specific thing, Music, PJ's music, and others, have been there since 1991 and I dont see them stopping. I have been obsessed with indie rock and listened to it for 95 percent of the time for the last year and a half but PJ's music is still important

it helped me as a youngster dealing with feelings of abuse, anger, angst

it radicalized me, politicized me, my political and world view is to some degree influenced by PJ

it got me into other good bands, other grunge bands, bands that PJ championed (uncle neil, bruce, dylan, the who, the ramones etc...)

it has helped me currently when I am in my "finding myself" mode, No Code and Avocado are the perfect albums for such soul searching.

Its music that still has power over me, as I havent listened to them much in the past year and a half but now feel like I need to dust off my copies of the catalogue!

In short they have helped me through everything.

it's the only thing getting me from day to day right now (that and friends/family) but music helps me where there is no one to help me.

    Ditto.

PJ music helped me to keep my sanity through tough times in mid '90s.

YES!!!! My sister was killed by a drunk driver last April. She was ONLY 26. Music has always been a huge part of my life, especially now during the healing process. Songs like "Long Road" and "Light Years" have new meaning for me now. My next tattoo is going to be the PJ stickman with wings and a halo with my sister's initials on it, to express how much she and music is and will always be a big part of my life. I'm going to 7 shows this tour, because I always wanted to "tour" with the band, if you will. What better time than NOW, because you never know . . . tommorow isn't promised to anyone.

OMG! PJ have helped me in soooo many ways...

They helped me get through all the bullshit fightng that my parents did when i was younger..i'd turn up PJ just to block it out!

They helped me SOOO much when my mum passed away and i didn't know what to do with myself..all i could do at the time was lie on my bed and listen to PJ on my cd walkman

PJ help me on a daily basis just to get through the stresses of raising 2 kids who drive me nuts at times

To put it in a nutshell if i didn't have PJ in my life , I have NO idea of how i'd get through my life..i listen to their music EVERYDAY!! and i am sooo thankful for what they have given us the fans..they are truly #1...

It helps me realize that these guys play real music and are not sucked into the bullshit music world we are living in right now. Not that everything any other band does sucks but I believe that the state of music we are in currently blows!

I think you'll find that 99% of people on this board would respond "yes" to this. To some degree, music has helped all of us through some important time in our life or helped us face some obstacle. Heck, that's probably the reason most of us are here: You get attached to bands and music as it becomes important to you and starts to 'mean' something, whatever that may be. If I was a casual PJ fan, I would not be posting here. The music has gone beyond just being something that plays in the background. I can tie in dozens of songs to moments in my life.

Its funny how some ablums mean more to you at different times of your life.

Ten when I was a kid

Vitalogy when I was a teenager

No code for my early twenties

    Binaural is my current one

I figure the others will fit when the time is right

I know what you mean. In '92 I was 16 years old and within the span of a month we found out my dad was cheating on my mom and I had open heart surgery. Needless to say it was a tough time as young teenager but Pearl Jam's music got me through it, especially Alive. I loved it on storytellers when he said the part about the fans lifting the curse because that song definetly had a celebration type meaning to it for me.

Sorry to hear about your sister but I will just add this story to the reasons I love this band.

It has helped me countless times! Through my late teens and early twenties Pearl Jam's music was my escape and I don't know how different it would have been without finding in Pearl Jam understanding of what I was going through. I felt like I wasn't alone.

Ten and Vs defines me as a teenager. Though I wasn't going through the same emotions as Ed wrote about, I was going through the same emotions as every other teenager does. Dealing with the fact that love can hurt, the rebelion against parents and society and that it's ok to have dark thoughts.
Binaural helped me get over the Roskilde accident. I didn't know any of the victims. But it was/is so easy to identify with them and I was standing only a few meters from them. And just as they did, I fell down a few times, but got up and didn't really feel any danger. It might as well have been me........

Great thread. Lots great stories inhere. Though sad, it's nice to see that ppl can find comfort in Pj's music and move on.

certainly has...my son was born two months early and had to stay in the hospital for two months. Long Road (hence my name) helped me through that experience a ton. It was the first song we played in the car when we took him home. He's 3 1/2 now and he knows Long Road as "his song"...whenever he hears it, he says "this is my song."

That whole experience took my appreciation for PJ to another level.

and it's not only their music, but pj stance towards the world that has really helped and encouraged me.
