I just bought on Ebay 24 pair of drumsticks for cheap. At Lowes I also bought some of that liquid-rubber (like the stuff which covers the handles of pliers) and I'm planning on rubberizing the grip of my drumsticks so they'll have a better grip.

Anyone ever try this?

  • You can get sticks like this, but a few friends said there hands tended to blister more when using these sticks. There is a wax type of stuff that isn't to expensive which helps grip.
  • When I was in marching band (yeah yeah yeah...hahahha), anyway, the drummers used electric tape to make sure the sticks didn't break and they also had good grip. The drummer of my former band(also a band geek) does this and he gets great results.

DUDDEEEEEE MARCHING BAND ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!! (Tenors Representin')

Anyways, i use many different types of sticks, and theres a nice pair of jazz sticks by Zildjian, the Trilok Gurtu Artist Series, and they have a nice contoured grip that fits your hand nicely, I like them a lot.

  • My old drummer used the grippy tape that you can get for tennis racquets... it's pretty expensive compared to the other stuff, but it's a lot nicer, so if your sticks last a while it's not a bad route.

I've been on the lookout for the older Danny Carey signature sticks with the ball-grip (if anybody knows what I'm talking about) like this:

I think they got discontinued, so I'm probably out of luck there. His new sticks aren't bad, either, but I really liked the old ones.
...and if you don't like it, you can suck on an egg.

I played trumpet mostly but I was a drummer every once in a while. I played quads and snare (snair?) mostly. Damn.. I love being in college and not knowing how to spell...THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT!

Its all about dropping/throwing a stick and picking up another one while continuing to play in time.

But in all seriousness, I had never even considered using tape, but I might start.

I took a test-pair of my new (cheap but great) drumsticks from ebay and wraped a rubberband around the handle so it crossed back and forth looking something like this on the handle:

(pretend this is a drumstick, with the tip at the top, and the rubberband wrapped on the lower part)

    O
    !!
    !!
    !!
    !!
    !!
    X
    X
    X
    X

Then I dunked the handles in black plastic/rubber liquid which solidified a few hours later.

Now I have great grip and ridges for the stick to have even more to hold onto.

I HIGHLY recommend this for anyone wanting more grip!!

Or even just wrapping rubberbands around the handles.

I was avoiding tape, since it gets all yucky over time, or mushy when the stick's handle hits the snare rim.

ive had sticks with grip.. make no difference they just rip after a while
and personally i feel people saying they need grip should just work more on their technique
i mean iff u keep dropping your sticks... just learn to hold them tighter

i tend to use vic firth 3 A's when i play.. suits my style but i dont use tape round my hands or put grip on them

LOL iff its such a problem just tape the sticks to your hands

No. Its not a problem that occurs daily. But during the winter my hands are drier than other months, so the lack of moisture makes them want to slip.

I've been playing 22 years, so I think my technique is fine. Just some days it helps to have a grip handle.

This plastic/rubber stuff really does a good job. Hope this helps someone else.

  • Yeah, marching in the winter or in the rain and doing crazy formtations while trying to choreograph 'dance' moves all makes it very difficult to hold onto a stick...not to mention the tape helps keep the stick from breaking.
