Dave a is using a 8x12 Brady Snare as his primary snare ? or was it a typo ? should it be 8x13" Brady Snare ?
clarifications would be much appreciated. Thanks!

In fact, I do remember one of Dave A's snare's being sold on ebay. It had the stickman on it too. Can't remember how long ago (a year or two?)
who's jimmy ? anyone else can confirm ? and what's the wood used on DAve A's Brady 12x7 snare by the way ? was it a steel snare or maple or birch ?
jimmy was Dave's drum tech and even played on one of the PJ albums.
woah thats a cool fact, what songs specifically jimmy played ?
as far as i know it was only one, and it was a devilish good tune.

Hey man!
I've been playing for about 22 years or so.
What I'd recommend is getting a used set pretty cheap. The reason why? You'll gain an appreciation for what to upgrade and why.
If you start off with a great set, the sound may be lost on a beginner.
I started off on a relatively cheap CB persussion set with B8 Sabian cymbals when I was 9. I got a little better and bought better equipment a little at a time. Now, I'm up to pretty good gear.
So my recommendation - having gone thru it myself, is to get the cheapest set possible.
....just like if you start off life driving a Ferrari, you'll probably not understand why a ferrari is superior to a Honda. Start off with a Honda.
Good luck!!

but, my drum teacher proposed me to buy SONOR FORCE 507 drum set, and the best ZILDJIAN cymbals that i can get-because ''they are very important during the drumming''- he said...
so, what is your expertly opinion about that?

anyway back to Dave A's snare... anyone ?
"DAVE ABBRUZZESE
Client since 1991
Equipment:
12” x 7” Jarrah Block Snare
12” x 7” Sheoak Block Snare
14” x 8” Jarrah Ply/White Gimlet Basketweave Snare
Jarrah Ply Drumkit/Silver Gimlet Gloss: 8” x 8”, 10” x 9”, 12” x 10”, 14” x 12”, 20” x 18 Bass Drum."
Now, this is probably a more current list of gear, and not the gear he was using during his time with Pearl Jam, since that was close to 15 years ago... tastes change, etc. However, I think it's fairly safe to say that he would've used something very similar to either the 12x7 Jarrah, or the 12x7 Sheoak drums listed above. Currently they do NOT make a 12x8, though they may have in the past.
For the debate going on as to what material the drums were, Jarrah and Sheoak are both types of wood. Brady does NOT do the ordinary maple and birch drums you see from other companies, but rather they specialize in more unique (and expensive!) materials.
However, in earlier live videos, I've seen Dave using a fairly shallow Pearl Free Floater, most likely the 14x3.5 maple-shelled version, so there's always that too.
Hope this narrows it down a little bit.
starting out on a cheaper set is important, but don't get caught up in it too long, because a better sounding set really adds to your playing. if you feel like your playing well for the amount of months/years/wahtever you have been playing, then see about getting a new set if you want. i was very happy with my gretsch, and all though i SUCK at tuning drums, it does sound better, especially the bass drum which sounds great.
as for cymbals, do not buy cheap cymbals, cheap cymbals are worse than cheap drums IMO. stay away from sabian b8's b8 pros, zildjian zbt's, paiste pst-3's.
paiste pst-5's are the best cheap cymbals around IMO. or you can step up to paiste alphas. i own paiste alphas (90's versions of them, not the new model's) and for a beginner starting out, their fine. but after a year of playing, i am really looking for a better sound.
oh and watch out with cymbals, as they can be more expensive then the drums themselves, and more cymbals is not as important as you think. originally i wanted like 3 splashes, 3 crashes, a ride, hi hats, 2 chinas. that is overkill. im happy with my set up now (hi hats,ride,2 crashes, splash, china) maybe a third crash down the road though.
wow that was alot....hope this helped out.

yes, actually i'm making my own shell
i'll be using maple to create my own snare.
another question, i remember reading some article that dave a used a picollo on recording "GO" was it true ? if so what's the spec of that picollo snare ?
Why is starting out on a cheaper set important ???
are you actually building the shell yourself? Keller is a company that provides shells to virtually EVERY drum company (Tama, Rogers, ludwig, DW) going back to the 60's/70's drum shells have been manufactured by Keller. Chances are the Brady snare is made from a Keller shell. You can get a maple keller shell too.

well would you go out and buy a top of the line drumset for someone just starting out playing? just like would you buy your 10 yr old a les paul to start out with? i dont think you would.

yes i am, i have the tools to make one. just experimenting that's why i wan't to know dave's exact snare size
Brady make their own drums. They are making one for me right now! Cant wait to get it.
chances are it's a keller shell
