Acoutics question?

Ok, slowly but surely I am upgrading all my music equipment and I really am excited by the improved quality of my music because of the things I've been buying.

I just recently bought a bunch of egg carton crates to help with sound in my music room. I have a couple of questions.

1. Does it make any difference which direction, front or back, which angle, etc etc, I put them up? Are there any benefits to mixing them in different patterns?

2. Which direction would you recommend recording vocals? With me facing the crates or away from the crates? Or does it not make a huge difference?
