Anyone play Mandolin?

Well, anyone play Mandolin? The reason for me asking is because I would like to purchase one in the near future and begin playing. I know it is tuned the same way as a violin and is very similar, and I have been playing the violin for 7 years so I THINK i would have a head start. So really, my question is, are they the same? Any glaring differences I should know? Any useful info in general? Thanks in advance.
