Yo, i am in a band with four other members, it is cool but sometimes i think we are all after a different sound. One likes punk, i like heavy rock, the other likes Nickleback (?!?) so when we're writing it seems like we bring things totally different to the band.

I want direction, y'know, a sound which is our own and an amalgamation of all our tastes (apart from Nickleback)

Somebody help me man, i feel like i am on a sinking ship.

just keep playing together and working on ideas. maybe have a meeting to discuss goals and direction...find some common ground and go from there.

Good luck. You should really discuss this with your bandmates before people start getting frustrated.
