I'm looking into doing some home recording and wondering what any of your

opinions on a good digital recorder to get started with?

Apple macbook w/ Garageband - entry level, single track at a time
    -- add LogicPro
    -- add MOTU firewire input

Viola! Full blown 8-track portable recording studio and audio workstation that will be infinitely easier to operate than the menu-driven systems on the stand-alone units. We gave up on the Tascam, Yamaha, Fostex, Roland multitrackers a few years ago. But I do like the Zoom H2 and H4 field recorders and they both work great with the Macbook.

honestly, I'd stay away from stand alone units with not a lot of inputs. Multi Track non linear recording is awesome. The Computer Systems available now that even ship with mixers are pretty nice and easy to use.

Hopefully Dave will chime in on this.

I suggest perusing http://www.sweetwater.com They have a pretty nice selection of products you can then search. You need to develop a realistic budget and decide how you will record.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.
