Anyone good at splicing instrument cables?

I need to splice a couple cables to basically make a cable with a male XLR end and a quarter-inch end. Anyone know how to do so....can't really find anything on Google. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I just need a cable to connect a digital piano (via quarter inch jack output) to an analog synth...via the vocoder input (xlr).
Sure....for $25-$40 for a halfway decent one....but for someone who has a bunch of extra cables lying around that wants to know how to splice them together to save himself some dough....how does one do it. I've got the time, I've got the tools (soldering gun, etc.).....I just don't know how to splice two specific cables together.
Again, I know I can buy one....but I take pride in my thriftiness.
